Since I bought my computer, second-hand, I have not been able to download anything.

First, everything starts normal. I am prompted to either save a program to disk, or open it from it's current location.

Then it downloads. Here is where the problem starts.

When it finishes and I try to open it or run it, I get this:

Windows cannot find DAP.exe.

This program is needed for opening files of type 'ZIP Files'.

Location of DAP.exe.
And then a place to type in the location.

I have no idea what all this means, but I have looked for DAP.exe and have been unable to find it, if it even exists on my computer.

Can anybody help me find it get it, tell me where to get it, or find a way to run 'ZIP Files' without it?

The association for zip files was somehow changed to dap.exe. To open zip files you need a different program. Winzip is the most commonly used. If you have winzip installed, do the following.
Locate a zip file and select it. Then right click it and select `Open with'. Scan down the list until you find winzip. Select it and also select 'Always use this program ...'.

I think DAP.EXE is related to a Download Accelerator

My first suspicion though is about the presence of a Spyware.
My suggestion is to run an Antivirus Program to rule out any Virus and then download and run all three of the following Antispyware Programs unless & until you are convinced that your PC is free from Spyware and there is indeed a Download Accelerator that needs to be Uninstall & Reinstalled [I am no fan of Download Accelerators]

Online Free Virus scanners:

1. HouseCall

2.
Panda ActiveScan Free Online Scanner

Downloadable Free Antispyware

1. Adaware6.0 Standard

2SpyBot S&D

3.CWShredder

DAP is Download Accelerator Plus -- adware. Go into 'regedit' from 'run' and do search, in 'edit', for DAP. Delete every entry where it occurs. Backup (export) the registry from 'registry' so you can easily go back to square one if you mess up. :-)

Thank you, but I cannot find anything about DAP in "regedit" and I cannot Run anything that I download until DAP.exe is gone. I also cannot change where my files open up, for some reason, "Open with" doesn't show up.

I wonder how I'm going to rid myself of this rotten program.

1.You should Hold down the Shift Key while RIGHT-clicking the File to get the Open with option in the Context menu in Win98SE

2. Can't you run the Online Virus Scanner ?

3. You may download the Antispyware to another PC with CD-RW and transport the files to this PC after making the burnt CD-RW readable in all CD-ROM drives.

1. Use Spybot or AdAware, updated, to kill the registry references for you. The entries will be in a software key under the Classes_Root section, which is where file associations for the various components are stored.

2. As said, change the file association with a Shift-RtClick on a zip file and Open With - do make sure the "Always use this program with this file type" is checked as you select WinZip. Alternatively, WinZip itself lets you set which compression types it will manage for you - check out WinZip's options/prefs.

3. Educate your friend on safe surfing - using a firewall, scanning regularly with anti-spyware and anti-virus tools, being cautious of anything which claims to be "free" ware, meaning ask yourelf two questions: 'if this software is that good, why are they giving it away instead of selling it?' and 'this is a no charge item - where's their profit coming from?'

It took quite some time, but I did finish running the online virus scans. It says that I have no viruses present.

I also don't have WinZip. If I get that, will it solve my problem? I have to know, if I'm going to have to spend $30 for it.

You can download a freeware called Power Archiver which will also perform Zip/Unzip function done by Winzip, a shareware.
