I just got a new motherboard and reinstalled Windows 98se. When it gets to the point where it Verifies DMI Pool Data, it takes a really long time to get to Windows. I also have the problem where it hangs at the Windows Is Shutting Down screen. Are there any updates that can fix these? Thanks

I get this problem too. The shop where I bought the pc from said that win98se does this on a faster cpu pc. I also get hanging when on the net too.

Yup, Windows 98 really doesn't like the faster processor speeds. It's a pretty ancient operating system (in computing terms) and wasn't tested on these new "high end" chips. It also doesn't really like RAM in excess of 512 MB.

Probably time to upgrade to Windows XP. I'm waiting to get new 17" monitors before I do so, as I've heard XP should really be best viewed on 17" or higher, and I only have two 15" right now. I also want to upgrade from my Athlon 1.3 GHz, but will upgrade to larger screen and Win XP first.

Martin.

Win98SE runs fine with my XP2000+. Microsoft has a patch for the shutdown problem.

Here are some things to try for the hang at the DMI Pool check:

#1
boot from floppy and type sys c:

#2
You need to reset the DMI pool.
Get into your bios (it will tell you the "press soandso key for setup" when you cold boot),
and then go to device configuration and enable the reset configuration.
(I'm guessing it's an award bios.)If all else fails, reset the cmos jumper.
The probability is your devices don't match the current DMI pool.

#3
Turn exterior and interior caches off/on

#4
Set all hard drives to 'auto detect'

DMI Pool Data relates to the Desktop Management Interface. This is a portion of NVRAM (non-volatile RAM) that holds Plug and Play information about the system.

In the BIOS, under Plug and Play, there should be a listing to update the system. Go to: Reset Configuration Data, and set it to: Enabled. Save the changes when you exit the BIOS, and reboot.

"ESCI Update Succesful" should appear before the DMI Pool message flies by.

There is information on the DMI problem found on this website:
http://www.dewassoc.com/support/win98/verify_dmi_data.htm

Had the same problem once, and following these instructions (Method 2) did the job.

Try using a different video card and see what happens.
