OS: win 98
CPU/Ram: ram-64mb
Model/Manufacturer: E Machines 366
Comment:

I got this computer from a friend. It only has 64mb of ram. What I want to know is; where can I find ram sticks for it to put in the other slot? Another question-How do I get into the bios setup and what keys do I need to press?

Try Crucial or Kingston for looking up or buying the correct RAM.

For E Machines I think you need to tap the DEL key at bootup to enter the BIOS.

Why do you need to get into the BIOS?
Make sure install security softare.

After finding out what type of RAM you need (probably SDRAM) you may find compatible RAM at swap meets or computer shows at flea markets. The cost of recycled chips should be much less than buying new, as this is now obsolete RAM.

Care must be taken not to exceed the rated capacity for the slot and to get the correct density chips.

Here's an ebay search for 128 meg sticks:

http://computers.listings.ebay.com/...

Don't get any larger than that as the chipset might not be able to see it properly. You'll probably want sticks with the lower density chips on them. I've got some too if you can't find what you need.

Thanks everyone for your input. Where can I get a larger harddrive as mine is only 4.3gb? What is the maximum size that I can have? Reading the label on the front of the computer, it says Intel Celeron 366Mhz. When I got this computer, it didn't come with a installation cd. Where can I get one of those to use if and when I get a larger harrdrive?

Your best bet would be to leave the drive as is and add a second drive for storage and programs.

I am trying to remember when allowable drive sizes ramped up.

Posting the BIOS version and brand would probably help determine what the drive size can be. You should see that info during the POST screens at startup.

Download, install, and run Everest Home Edition on this machine. (Clean FreeWare) Once it's finished loading, run a report (Report Wizard).

Save all hardware related pages (the default) to a TEXT file in a location of your choice. (It will default the location to C:\Program Files\Lavalys\EVEREST Home Edition\Reports, unless you redirect it.)

Post the information for your bios, motherboard, and RAM.

It's a good day when you learn something

Grandpa72,
By trying to upgrade that old pc ,you will still have a pc that is running at 366mhz and if you plan to put in say $100.00 bucks or so, then look here,to solve your problem.

Your computer may only support drives up to 33 GB. If you flash the BIOS or get a controller card it can go higher. Its recremended not to flash the BIOS because it it fails it could kill the computer.

Thanks
