Hiya all.
I'm haveing a bit of a problem again..
I just recently formated my HDD and reinstalled everything includeing the critical updates from microsoft etc etc,,
But the problem is as of right now for some reason when I try to see if there is any more updates it gives me this error
---------
Windows Update has encountered an error. This may be due to a discrepancy in your computer's time setting.
---------
Now I know my time setting is correct.. I mean heck I've used to same one for god only knows how long and its never done this to me before.

So whats the problem? Why is it doing this or am I not alone and its just microsoft being screwed up.

Also if it helps I recently installed the unoffical windows 98 SE service pack too.
and the error number is 0x800C0008

Yes, added info helps immensely in this particluar case, glad you included it. The unofficial update is to blame directly as it substitutes some encryption files (SSL) on its own as if it were written by God himself - it's not. Whether, you like it or not your System.ini file has also been set to
ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1
along with a host of other 'not for everybody' changes in settings and files.
I can't recommend the update based on that alone. Fine for the guy who wrote it and his machine, but sure death to how many others?

error 0x800C0008 indicates that your Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is broken which means you can not access secure sites of which WinUP is just one. More info here.
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers2.htm#secure_sites
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/recommended/128bit/default.asp

Because older files will not overwrite higher versioned files and the ones in the unofficial update are probably the highest in the land, your only solution for this build may be to install ie 6 SP1 to match and hope for the best? Or start all over and leave out the unofficial patch?

The unoffical patch seems to have some uninstall info and strings within it and if it has an entry in the Add/Remove Programs list you might try that approach, but I don't see how it will actually undo everything, everywhere.

I agree. I had installed this unofficial patch to my 98SE machine about three or four years ago. It seemed to work well for a few days, but then problems started showing up. (This patch has been covered in this forum years ago, and it was Mesich I believe who got me on the right track about it.)

I had to eventually do as melee5 is suggesting above; "...start all over and leave out the unofficial patch..."

Since you've recently " formated my HDD and reinstalled everything includeing the critical updates from microsoft etc etc,," now might be a good time to do it again as the pain level will be less than if you keep running with it. ;>(

Crap... I knew that service pack was too good to be true... *sigh* I wish microsoft would have made a real service pack for it or somthing..or make the updates easyer to get to anyway... oyvay.. Well I'm not formatting just yet.. I just now got everything back to par on the PC and now I got to destroy it again? AHHH that took forever lol. oh well.. at least I got everything backed up :| so theres no way to bypass this problem and get the critical updates anyway is there? besides trying to uninstall it..

I was thinking about what you said about installing IE6 and after I read that I knew I already had it installed... buuuuut what if I reinstalled it and over write everything with that... and ya know what? Bingo it works now :D. Lets hope I dont have any future PC headachs lol. Thanks a bunch guys :)
