Windows 98SE Shutdown Problem

Comment:
My computer was behaving just fine till about 2 days ago when I clicked shutdown, I get to the screen where it says "windows is now shutting down" in blue letters on the bottom of the screen. After that my computer dosen't power down or shut off anymore, I have to manually press the power button. Windows must be shutting down because when I turn the computer back on it dosen't say "windows was improperly shut down". Is there anything I can do to remedy this situation? Right now I'm using a Hewlett Packard Pavilion 6630, 500 MHZ celeron, 64 MB ram. Thanks.

go to Start, Run, and type msconfig, when you get that window go to starup and deselect all of the programs, restart the computer and your problem is solved
Click on Window update. When you get there type in shutdown problem and download the patch. This will fix the problem.

I downloaded the patch from Microsoft, I deselected the programs in the startup of msconfig. My computer still hangs at the shutdown screen. This began happening after I ran System File Checker and it replaced one of the system files saying the original file was corrupt. The file that was replaced was setupx.dll. I have no idea what this file does and if that could be the problem. Thanks.

Just try re-installing windows over top of itself and that should solve the problem. HTH

There are no yellow marks in device manager. As far as reinstalling windows on top of itself, I only have the Windows 98 disk, not the Windows 98SE which is what is on my computer. I'm probably going to buy 98SE if I can't resolve this issue. Saw it for a resonable price (under $100.00). Thanks.

Had the same problem with an old Compaq and I had to disable "fast shutdown". Couldn't say definitely that it's what you need to do but attached you will find the link I used to resolve my situation. I'm sure you will find your solution in there as well. Good Luck Please let me know if it works http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/all-tips.shtml
