Comment:

I installed a motarola cable modem during my change over to high speed, and have had nothing but trouble.

I haven't had any trouble connecting to the internet, in fact, the surfing the net is great!

The problem is that when ever you install software on win98se, it is not set up for the auto run install procedures that pretty much all software manufacturers provide. 98se detects what device you have and then tries to walk you through its way of installing the software. THose of you who are familiar with in stalling on 98 know where i am comming from.

Anyway, since I know that whatever 98 asks me to do to install is a bunch of bs, i just cancel through every thing it asks me to do, and usually every thing is fine. That is I cancel through every thing and then kick off the autorun and the software installs- no problem.

However, today this has not been the case. Now every time I boot up the boot process is interupted and 98 is asking for vnetsup.vxd, vredir.vxd, dfs, vxd. it says that my system.ini file makes refrence or somthing to these files and they arnt there. After that, i looked in my system.ini file and saw nothing that used the names of these files. These file names are not even used in this file.

Everything works great. the problem is that i skipped over the one stupid screen that was asking me for these files. I have since tried to use the uninstall utillity that came with the motorola soft ware, which didn't help, as well as trying to reinstall hoping that I would be asked for the files again, but it never asks me again.

Last but not least, after I hit anykey to continue during the boot process after it asks me for the files every single time, it goes on to boot up and throughs up a windows screen that says msnp32.dll is unable to be loaded.

With all that being said, every thing works greate. It seems to me 98 feels i have hurt its feelings and is trying to get me back. Any help, would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I was refering to the series of screens given by 98 that asks you to insert the windows 98 cd. Anyway, I have solved my problem. Thanks anyway!

Just a suggestion, you have enough ram, why don't you install winXP, it is much superior to win98?

If you need a simple solution, try mine. I try to give advise on things that have happened to my PC. Changes in registry can be FATAL!

Probably the easiest way is to open 'system' in control panel. Under 'system', if it says

Microsoft Windows 98
4.10.1998

it's first edition. If it says

Microsoft Windows 98
Second Edition
4.10.2222

it's second. Also from a dos prompt you can type:

ver

and enter to find it.
