Hi, I'm trying to get a dual-boot system running, and have so far gotten to the point where I can choose to load either Windows98se or WindowsXP, however, during the windows98se installation several files appeared to be missing from the precopy folder, I also received an error message "Your multifunction device (standard dual pci ide controller) has some child devices using 32 bit drivers and others using compatibility mode drivers. This configuration is not supported....", and when I use win98se my hard drive runs in ms-dos compatibility mode, and my cd-rom and dvd-rom drives are inaccessible except when I run the setup disc and choose boot with cd support, but then I'm only able to use the command prompt.

-Another error tells me every time I start windows98se that vnetbios.vxd is missing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to install the motherboard chipset drivers.

That is evidently a rebranded board. The link below has TWO versions listed. The R480M manual shows it is the MS-7145. If you have a variant of that board you may need one of the other ones listed there.

The chipset drivers should be the same for all models but you need to compare to what you actually have in the way of integrated hardware. That will be the difference between the models. I think yours is the first one. Once you determine which version you have then I suggest you download ALL the Available files and burn them to disk.

I hunted and it doesn't appear there are any drivers for Win98/ME.

Why don't you just install Virtual PC 2007. You can install Win98 inside of Virtual PC and it should run it OK. Check it out.

Well, you could try to find Win98 drivers for the ATI SB400 chipset that is used on your Motherboard. I don't know if there are any Win98 drivers but there are other boards that used that chipset.

I tried ATI's site and didn't have much luck but that is where it might be found, if at all.

I think the problem is with the SATA controllers. I don't think there are any Win98 drivers. They may be all on the same chip.

I don't know anything about that chipset.

You will not find any W98 ATi Chipset drivers, and installing XP drivers is stupid.

W98 and XP have different code bases.

Virtual PC 2007 in XP is the way forward...

Virtual PC is, regrettably, too slow for games.

Then use a computer that is compatible with Win98.

I am not a gamer so excuse the question if it is stupid but why can't you play the games in XP?

I know some gaming hardware designed for 98 will not work under the NT kernal but that isn't the end of the world.

As you found out, you can't run Win98 on a modern system. I'm sure if you were to look in the motherboard manual you'd find a statement about which operating systems are (or aren't) supported.

Just use XP & run your games in Win98 compatibility mode.

The games I'm trying to run, require a true dos prompt to configure, install, and run. Emulating them via dosbox is an option, but the more graphically complex games run too slow or too fast to be any fun.
Perhaps if I installed only DOS 7.1 on one partition and XP on another. Would that be any easier?

p.s. -thanks for your time OtheHill
