The tools portion of this website offers an explanation called the circular partition trick. It offers a boot disk based on Freedos(for fat 16 and fat 32 only hard drives) to boot the computer when hard drive and diskette drive fail to boot it.It has to be non ms-dos to work.If you can boot the computer you would then run a dos based antivirus program to scan the computer.Good luck.

you can go to www.bootdisk.com and down load a win98 'Program' to make a boot floppy on the comp you are now on.

Have you had the back off your computer at all, if so check the IDE leads are secured in their sockets.
Also check the BIOS settings correspond to your HD, if you’re not sure change the settings to auto.
Get back

I know this is a dah question, please dont take offence, but is there any floppy inside the floppy drive ?
if yes, take it out and restart.[I had once made a trip to a friend's place at 10 in the night after his frantic call saying he comp was not booting and he needed it to. And it turned out that a floppy was left in the drive...that was all there was to it!!]
If thats not the case then do you remeber deleting any files from the root ie., C: ?
What was the last thing you did on the comp before this happened?download a program to create a boot disk from bootdisk.com as suggested in response # 3. Then RUN THE PROGRAM with a floppy disk in the drive, using the computer you are on now. (it need n't even be a W98 machine...any windows will do).
Then boot with the floppy IN the drive and type at A:\>
sys C:if there are no other problems, this should make your Hard disk bootable and probably start windows. If you face any more problems, do feel free to post.

Is your HD properly identified in cmos--usually as AUTO?
When you get a bootdisk, boot with it and at the a:\> prompt type:
fdisk
and enter. Y to large disk support then option 4. Exactly what does it say?
