CPU/Ram: hp brioba600 600mh/128mb
Product: hp
Comment:

hello there i have the following problem:
I have an old pc hp brio ba600 600 mhz,128 mb ram and windows98os
The problem is that i format my hd and i installed a fresh copy of windows 98.When it past the logo of windows98 the desktop appears and it asks to install some drivers. The first driver that it asks is the monitor.when the windows appears to install the driver the pc autorestarts and it goes to rr loop when it asks the monitor driver.I past that problem by pressing rapidly enter and when the window tha asks for monitor driver to installed it cansels the installation. So the desktop appears with all the icon but after 3-4 seconds it restarts again. So i went to safe mode where i installed with floppy th monitor drivers but the problem exists.it restarts in normal mode.I change the ram,hd but the problem is the same.no blue screen no disk errors only restarts? What is going on?i run diagnostic tools but no problem found i instaled from another cd the os but same problem. So it is a conflict in irq?i use chipset vga.Thnx.

Look at the two links below. The first leads to the second which is the download page for all the drivers, which I suggest you get. In addition to installing those drivers I suggest you also burn them to CDR as HP is known to discontinue support at any time.

I have done it but it didn't help.
Also i disable all the devices from the device manager ins afe mode and start after in the normal mode but nothing.I have update all the drivers except from hard drive,Also i remove all the proccesses from the staup(msconfig) but i have the same result no error only restarts!
Is there any way to see from safe mode any log with the drivers and proccesses that the pc does in normal mode before it restarts?

If other OSes are also giving you problems then you definately have a hardware problem. Check the processor cooling fan to make sure it is rotating. Could be a weak power supply too.

Was this computer running OK recently?

well the computer has a history.BEfore 4 years has the same problem. Before that i have send it to the store where i bought it beacause my hard drive had problems and they change it with e new one. After one month the computer start the restarts. So as noob i geve more volts to the power supply and i burn the power suply. After 3 yeaars(today) i bought a new power supply and i saw that tha computer haven't any other problems.ALso i change ram and hard drive.I run diagnostic tools and it didn't find any problems. But the restart remain...I have instaled all the drivers and it goes to safe mode without any problems..I run scandisk and scanreg but it didn't find any problem. The only thing that i saw is that when it goes to normal mode and it goes to install drivers that it found it restarts. i skip it by pressing enter rapidly. So i am in the point where the desktop it appears and after 4-5 seconds it restarts again..Is there any trick to see which files it loads and in which file it ends before it restarts?
Also the proccessor hasn'ta ny cooler beacause it is too old and i take it without fan.
It is a sherwood-b and the proccessor is like a pci card.it isn't chipset.

Are you saying you are using the processor without any fan?

It's probably a slot 1 with a heatsink that's cooled from the PSU fan. If that's not the case then the cpu must be overheating.

You can check the drivers and files that load by using the bootlog.txt option after accessing the boot menu via F8. Then when it reboots choose 'command prompt only' from the menu. At the c:\> prompt type
more bootlog.txt and enter. The last few lines are what was loading (or attempting to load) when it rebooted. However, if the booting process is already getting to the desktop the bootlog.txt may not be of any use.

I've got a couple of those Brio P-III in a corner somewhere that I'm going to scrap when I get motiviated. I can probably sell you the motherboards for a few dollars if you're interested. Although it'd probably be a better idea for you to get something newer.

But it has a heatsink on it?

It does sound like a hardware problem. You might use the F8 option, boot to 'command prompt only' and let it sit there awhile. Then see if it reboots.

OK, some non-specific hardware problem that is causing a problem between its drivers and windows.

I guess its got on-board video. If possible use a PCI card instead. Disable or remove any modem or network cards. Might also be bad ram.

The drivers wouldn't be loading in safe mode.

I don't know of any diagnostic way to pinpoint the problem. The best I can do is suggest you disable/swapout/remove as much hardware as you can and then see if the problem goes away.

Yeah, that's the way it is on my safe mode too. There may be a problem there but the safe mode behavior isn't evidence of that.

I suppose you had to install 98 and then afterwards install the video and sound drivers. Do you recall if you had this problem before installing the drivers? You might try reformatting and install 98 again but this time without those drivers.

one second after the winodw that asks for drivers pop up the pc restarts!I past that problem by pressing rapidly enter which cancels the installation of the drivers. The desktop icons shows up and after 2-3 second pc restarts with no errors.

Take a look at the capacitors on the MBoard. Look for leaking or bulging on any of them. Your MBoard may be one of the millions that got capacitors with bad elecrolyte in them. If any symptoms are present then the MBoard is your problem. It does sound like an issue with the video. Are you sure you are trying to install the correct driver for your video and OS?

Are you sure it's the monitor driver and not the video adapter driver? I had that problem once with a compaq but a reformat fixed it. Normally windows will not gripe about needing a monitor driver. What monitor are you using?

The monitor is connected to the video adapter so, barring a motherboard problem as OtheHill suggests, I'd guess it's either a problem with the monitor or video adapter.
