Windows '98 will not start up

When I switch on Windows'98 starts to load.I get the Windows '98 logo then it goes to a screen that looks like a dos window with a line of information saying 'window in safe mode.....time to switch of and reboot...press any key. when i do it gives the the old saying....'you can now switch of your comp. Next time I switch on it gives me the 5 options 1=normal etc I can get to the safe mode I think I need to fefresh Windows 98. Ithink my son deleted an important file I am not sure. I have a Norton rescue disk I have made will that be ok. I do NOT want to wipe my drive clear. What do I do. EASY INSTRUcTIONS PLEASE

The easiest thing to do is to re-install Win98 on top of itself. You should have a Windows boot diskette. Boot this with CD-ROM support and then pay attention as to where the process assigns the CD-ROM. Generally drive E:\.
Place the CD-ROM (a full install cd) in the drive and:
Type E: Type Setup
This will generally repair the kind of problem you're having.

Is that the boot disk I got when I bought the pc? Why not use my norton rescue disk? If I use my original disk with my two cds I am affraid I will wipe all my data of my c drive

Rename windows folder to like windows1.. Then reinstall you will not lose any DATA. This will only place a new copy of WIN files and folders on your PC..
