Comment:

When i turn on my computer, it loads on and when it gets to the Windows loading clouds it only appears for about half a second the Command Prompt starts with:

Microsoft (R) Windows 98
(C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1981-1998.

C:\>

I have tried typing the "cd\windows" command but it comes out to "Invalid directory", therefore i can't do the WIN command. What can i do?

One thing to know is that i formatted drive C through command prompt, then i used a boot floppy to do the "sys c:" command. After this that problem startet.

You need to reinstall windows. Formatting removed all your software. Doing the 'sys c:' transferred the system files so the HD would boot. But that all that's on the HD now.

1.
The correct command to go to windows directory is cd windows
To start windows itself, type win

2. To start windows normally (without starting in command prompt) try these:
- Open the file msdos.sys (its a hidden file) in C: , use notepad to open it. make sure that GUI = 1 is set and Not, GUI = 0. if it says '0', change it to 1 and save the file and exit.
OR
-start-->run-->type msconfigclick on the "advanced" button. There is an option to force win98 to start in command prompt, make sure it is unchecked. (am on win2k now, I cant remember the exact line).
AND/OR
-delete winboot.ini in C: is it is there. (this is a hidden file too)

try these, and please post back with results,
regards and best wishes,

Ok. I haven't reinstalled windows, but i tried using the Recovery CD and the computer would start in command prompt with the A:\> I never got the cd to run. I even tried BIOS selecting the CD-ROM as first choice, also tried Drive C as first choice, aswell as the floppy drive, one at a time. Im afraid the cd to reinstall windows again wont be read too.

I just woke up from (obviously) sleep and missed out the last few lines in the original post. SORRY !!
As Daveincaps suggested, you will need to reinstall windows.

I learnt again, "haste makes waste", "hurry spoils curry", but I never seem to learn !!

Kailas,

I tried step No. 1 in different ways (typing different styles). Actually, my computer wont load to the desktop, so i cant go to start>run>msconfig. It just loads to command prompt.

If the restore cd is bootable you need to set the cdrom as the first boot device in cmos/setup. If it's not bootable you'll need to boot from a bootdisk, choose cdrom support and then at the a:\> prompt type whatever command it is that get the restoration process going.

Do as DAVEINCAPS says. When you get to the a:\ prompt type E:\setup.exe
The boot disk places files on your HDD and creates a drive it calls D:, so your cd drive now becomes E:
Setup.exe will start the setup prog. on the cd to install windows.
Good luck

When i put the recovery cd in and restart the computer, and the boot order of cdrom is set to first choice in BIOS, it starts the command prompt as:

Maybe if i insert the recovery cd, after the a:\> what would be the commands to make the cd run if i make the cdrom as first choice in BIOS? Something to notice is i formatted my c drive in command prompt and its been said that i need to reinstall windows. But what would be the commands to make the cd run in a:\> ?

Thanx DAVEINCAPS, Kailas, and ChrisE. Everytime i keep moving forward in steps, and learn from my mistakes.

HI reading post #8 your cd that you booted from is N: your other cd is O: so at the A:\ prompt do a N and enter then do a dir and see if there is a readme file to tell you what program you need to run, it might be setup.
Question with post #8 did you have a floppy disk in drive? If it booted from the CD it should have automatically went into recovery program.

Yeah, response number 8 leaves you at an a:\> prompt. Are you sure there's not a bootdisk in when you're doing that?

But as TopFarmer says, your cd drives are labled as N: and O:, so that's where you need to go to run the setup.
