When I shutdown my desktop I never see the message (It's now safe to turn off...) I wait for lot of minutes and nothing happen.
I need to restart the Pc But when i rebooting the scan utilitie run.
What's wrong on my PC?

It sounds like something hanging in the background. I had a machine that did that:
Hit CTRL ALT DELETE and see what is running you shuld only need explorer and systray try end task on the others one at a time untill the system shuts down correctly.Good Luck Amy;
Jay

There are some known problems now with shut down in Win98 and Win98 Second Edition (SE).
Goto the Microsoft Windows 98 Update site on the Microsoft Site and download the update that fixes the shut down problems. Jay's idea is also a good one above. He is telling you to open up the Task Manager. After shutting down each task, give the computer a few moments to respond...as the hang-up can be rather complex and dynamic.

Amy, do you have 1st or 2nd edition of Windowns? I have first edition and had the same problem. No wait or safe to shut down windows (logow.sys and logos.sys respectively. Do you have Norton Anti Virus installed? If so, remove it, extract the logow.sys and logos.sys and save them in
C:\WINDOWS. Shut down your computer a couple of times to make sure it works. Once it does you can reinstall Norton Anti-Virus.
Hope this helps you.

I experienced this problem too, goto start/run and type "msconfig" then click in the buttom advance and disable the rapid shutdown, this can fix your problem.

i have ibm 300 gl pc at home with win 98 loaded and while shutdowning the pc it just hangs up and didnt give the message " it now safe to turn off your computer "
it just gives that " windows is shutting down " and i have to reboot it again

This is a common problem with Windows 98 (1st and second edition). I have a file that is a fix for Windows 98 SE on my computer. It doesn't work for Windows 98 1st edition though. For that, you must use the "Windows Critical Updates" page. I know that I personnally can't stand Norton Anti-Virus and the way it does things. For those of you that have Norton, you may want to consult their tech site (www.symantec.com) for help because it is freezing because of thier floppy scan on shut down. (That blue screen on shutdown that says "scanning for Virus in A: Floppy drive.)
I am a certified technician and have come across this error numerous times, and the best suggestion is that shutdown fix on Microsoft webpage.

Had the same problem. Tried several downloads from Microsoft to fix the problem. None worked. Finally tried this and it fixed the problem for me. However it does not fix it for everyone I know who has the problem with 2nd. edition. Right click on your desktop and from the pop-up menu select NEW and then SHORTCUT. Type the following in the command box, exactly as shown including the space: rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindows Select Next and name the icon, ShutDown will do. Select Finish. Then a Shutdown icon will be put on your desktop. Then, if it works for you, all you have to do is double click the icon on the desktop and the computer will shut down.
