Hi I've had a lot of "mprexe.exe" not responding and Windows hanging (blank screen) when booting my computer. Tried several things, new mprexe, deleted *.pwl, new user profile, etc. My other computer also got the same problems, and after uninstalling ZoneAlarm (pro 2.6.362 trail), it was as I got a new computer. Anyone else encountered the same problems? Tried to send ZoneLabs a mail, but their not responding. Any other firewalls to recommend?

As a tech I run into a fair number of problems with Zone Alarm, usually lack of connection to Internet. It is actually a good firewall if you are technical enough to work with it. Joe user rarely understands the complexities of this type of software and can unknowingly screw themselves. Anything that manipulates winsock can wreak havoc in the wrong hands. That particular version seems to be so powerful, it keeps the user from getting out from behind the firewall. They have good tech support at the Zonelabs website and if you take the time to read through it you may get it working properly in the end. Otherwise, convert an old 486 into a router/firwall with coyote-linux or buy a router and configure it securely.

Summary: On that site you might want to click on the windows 98 SE tab and download the patch. Although the problem could be one of many things, the patch is the solution that works for most people. ...
