im trying to downgrade this computer from XP to win98 SE and i have gone into fdisk and deleted the NTFS partition and created a new FAT32 one, then restarted and formatted this..
now when i try to boot from the win98 SE cd it loads all the files but then has an error "program too big to fit in memory" and then goes to the D:\WIN98> screen waiting for me to type something.
i have no idea what to do..

Assuming that it's not physical, ie bad RAM [which it probably isn't if XP was working] it may be a read failure.
Try cleaning the CD and the CD drive.
Also try:
xcopy /v d:\win98 c:\win98\
c:\win98\setup

is there a program like this on the ultimate boot cd ? i forgot to mention i dont have a fdd on the computer im doing it on..

Assuming the CD is not corrupt, I would pull any other cards, disconnect all other drives, disable mobo sound etc.

OK, you've got that stupid gmail that blocks just about everything. If you want the file you need to make the appropriate changes in your email settings.
Remember a couple decades ago when Coke came out with 'new Coke'? All their eclectic surveys made them think it was the greatest thing since the pill. Well of course nobody liked the stuff and in a short time it was gone forever. It was so bad that when Coke restored the original formula they called it 'classic coke' in order to distance themselves from the debacle.
Well that's gmail. You had to get an 'invitation' to it. And people handing those out acted like they were 50-yard line tickets at the super bowl. It was just a load of hype.

Heh
Ah, yes - I've got nearly 3Gb of storage available in my (largely unused) gmail account - oh boy
Never tried, but I wonder if you archived the file with something other than ZIP (RAR or ACE for example) you might be able to slip an executable past the pesky gmail 'security'
We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true

My guess is that you only fdisk'd the 8mb DOS partition.
Use DelPart to remove the NTFS partition and then format the whole thing.
Then you should have enough memory to load Win98SE.
Bryan

Not obvious what partitions have to do with memory, but I'll stay tuned.
On the debacle front, [vaporware dept] Mr. Bill visited Japan and said that the Japanese version of vista would be released at the same time as the American ver.
LOL

Hmmm - can't hardly wait for that - or at least, the shiny new Computing.Net Vista forum
fwiw, "program too big to fit in memory" typically indicates a corrupt executable - but it may mean it's not being read correctly due to CD or memory errorsWe've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true

That's why I said what I did in #1.pat2k5,
Just for drill, boot on floppy and:
mem

Sure - that was just offered as a bit of expansion & reinforcement

Converting a partition from FAT32 to NTFS can be done by an inbuilt utility in the Windows XP operating system — but it is important to realise that it is a one-way process. You cannot convert back, except possibly by use of Partition Magic 7.01, and that is not always successful. Windows XP has no tool for converting from NTFS to FAT32.
http://aumha.org/win5/a/ntfscvt.php is where I found this info. Hope someone has found a work around for this situation for you.Rex

Well, "BB", they're not trying to run XP - rather, they are installing Win98 - hard to see the relevance
Thanks for staying focussed

Pat2k5, are you sure that Windows XP isn't still on your system. It's just the computer might think that you want both Windows 98 and XP and it can't fit both in.
I presume that you only want Windows 98 on your system and not XP as well. Well, When you formatted the drive, did any errors occur? If they did, the Windows XP may not have been completely removed.

Vi.
