my system when starting goes to the startup menu and when i select to do a normal startup it goes to the splash screen and hangs up there and never proceeds. Can you help me to try to fix this?..It isn't my everyday computer, it's just one that i want to use to store my photos on. I have ran chkdsk and scndsk and they come up with nothing.

Does Windows make it in Safe Mode?
If so, right click My Computer/Properties/Device Manager.
See if there are any red or yellow error symbols showing.

Press Esc when the splash screen appears and you may be able to determine the cause of the hang. Is there some reason you want to display the startup menu?

I have tried the escape button and it just goes to a blaccfk screen with a blinking line and the startup menu just showed up automatically the first time i had even turned on the computer. I cannot get past the splash screen.

Try safe mode as Derek suggested. If Windows doesn't load in safe mode, an over-the-top Windows re-install may be needed.

I have tried to startup in safe mode and it does the same thing. But if I have to re-install, I don't have a re-installation disk to re-install Windows 98 SE. Any other suggestions?

You could clutch a few straws - might be a registry problem.
Select one of the two command prompts. Type c:\windows\command\scranreg.exe /fix (then hit Return key). This will rebuild your registry.
Otherwise, if the problem is recent you could use the following command to try restoring a registry dated just before it happened:
c:\windows\command\scanreg.exe /restore (hit Return).Derek.W

OK, I ran the restore command and it restored fine, but when I restarted the computer, it stopped again at the splash screen.

Unless someone comes up with a better idea it seems you need to beg or borrow a W98SE CD.
You can load it in again over the top from DOS and your own stuff will be retained.

Search the hard drive for the cab files. They are often copied to C:\windows\options\cabs or c:\win98. If cab files are present, boot up with floppy disc and run setup from the hard drive.

When I tried to search for the cab files, I didn't get anywhere, it just says bad command or file name. That was correct to use the command prompt, right?..I don't know if this is even worth the time, now..

From command prompt, type "dir *.cab /s /p" (without quotes). If cab files are present, note the location. Win98SE cab files are dated 4-23-1999. Post back results.

Hey, Thanks so much all of you for your help..But I figured it out..The Memory Card was not fully pushed in..and now I am in safe mode getting rid of applications and hopefully that is all is wrong with it...Thanks again...And I will return if I need more help later....

Good news, thx for popping back with useful information.
Got caught out on that one, usually RAM connector problems show up as registry errors. Will kick myself LOL.
