Im having huge problems with windows 98. I have the CD and a start up floppy witch i made of the computer i am on right now (Win XP). When the problem first started, it said invalid system disk. I ran scandisk and it fixed that. Then kept going to a Command prompt. it would flash the loading screen then go to C:\>. So, i copied Autoexec.bat and config.sys to the C drive and now when i boot windows it says insert Windows Startup Disk 2. What one is that? ive tried inserting the CD and the floppy and nothing is happening.
ALSO, i tried using the ext command in many different ways but it says invalid command.
Any suggestions to get windows to boot up in graphical mode?

Download a Win98SE bootdisk from bootdisk.com. You can't make a Win98 bootdisk from WinXP. Are you trying to dual boot on the computer that has WinXP?

Did you DLoad the file and unzip and install to a floppy disk? Your Win98SE CD may be bootable on its own, some were, if so, no floppy is required. Try booting directly to the CD. Keep in mind that the partition you are installing to needs to be partitioned and marked as active prior to starting the Win98 install. The boot disk should include FDisk, which is used to partition the drive. Even if you are planning on using only one partition that spans the whole HDrive you still need to partition and mark the primary partition as active. Also, Win98 can't install to a partition larger than 127GBs. If the Harddrive you are using is larger than that look at the link below for info on 48bitLBA. Set your boot order like this: First boot device - floppy, Second boot device CD, Third boot device HDD0.

I would suggest that you delete config.sys and autoexec.bat. Autoexec.bat is probably causing that message.
Or use the bootdisk.com floppy.

Ext command? I'm not familiar with that.
When you get the momentary splash screen and then a dos prompt it means you've got the wrong msdos.sys file--the dos and not the windows version. On the 'invalid system disk' you probably ran the SYS command which installs the dos version. That made the hard drive bootable but only to dos.
It's probably best to do a dir c:/p at the c:\> dos prompt and see what files and directories you have. If you at least have a Windows and a Progra~1 folder then maybe you only need someone to email you the correct msdos.sys. Otherwise you'll need to reinstall windows.
And delete config.sys and autoexec.bat as max00 suggests:
DEL C:\CONFIG.SYS
DEL C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT

The file that you download from bootdisk.com is NOT the bootdisk itself...it is used to create the bootdisk. Some people copy the file directly to a floppy & then wonder why it doesn't work. You have to run the .exe file, you'll be prompted to insert a floppy, THEN the bootdisk will be created.
Then all you need to do is boot off the floppy & select the number for "with CD-ROM support" from the menu. The CD drive letter is usually "R", so just change A:\ to R:\, then type SETUP & hit [enter] (with the win98 CD in the drive).
