Hi.
I just restored my system from a windows 98 NORTON Ghost 6.01 bootable image. before that, I had the same image restored, but for some reason, when I rebooted my system, (by the way I have Norton Ghost, Utilities, and AntiVirus installed) there must have been an error with the MBR (Master Boot Record) because before rebooting, I did a Norton AntiVirus 2000 Virus Scan and it said there was no Master Boot Record. Whn I did a check for one, my system rebooted. I have tried using the command "fdisk /mbr" and I have used some Backup/recovery CDs with MBR fixing utils, but they didn't work. I tried using my restore CD again, but it did the same thing. I tried booting the system with Windows Safe Mode, but before loading the Windows GUI, it said "Windows Protection Error. You Need to restart your computer." I NEED SUGGESTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please help.

1st of all, what prompted you to attempt to restore your system?

2nd, how old is that image if it has Norton AntiVirus 2000 on it?

3rd, how are going about trying to fix the MBR? I suggest you boot off the Win98 boot floppy & run FDISK /MBR from the A:\> prompt

1. I had to restore my system because when I had XP on it, I tried Ubuntu Linux, then I wanted a dual boot system, and I erased every partition, so I restored the partition.
2. The image from Norton Ghost is from about 2004 or 2005.
3. If you read my post fully, you will see that I have already tried it. IT DOES NOT WORK!!!!!!!!!!

You did NOT state that you booted from a boot floppy to run FDISK /MBR.

You need to completely wipe the drive (again) & start from scratch. Boot off a Win98 boot floppy, run FDISK from the A:\ prompt & delete all partitions. Esc back to the A:\ prompt & run FDISK /MBR. Reboot, repartition, reformat & reinstall 98.

If your are getting to this point, seems the problem is not the mbr.

What did you use to delete & recreate the partitions?

I agree that a new complete installation is necessary. nnvincent if you restored the partition, did you use third party program and not FDISK. It sounds like you need to start from the beginning and restore your system. Make sure your partitions are correctly installed. I used partition commander to attempt to install a dual boot system. It created the partition but I could not install DOS into it and it would not stay after restart. Point is, make sure your installations are correct, but starting over seems to be the way to go. Hope you have a recent backup so you don't lose to much data.
