Subject: Windows 98 randomly reboots
Comment:

This is so damn frustrating. These are mostly all new parts I am using to build a new computer and f'ing windows won't work right. Here's what I have.

Asus A7V266-E
AMD 1700
Asus 8200 Geforce3 TI 500
SB Live Platinum
256 2100 DDR Mushkin ram
3com network card
Creative DVD Encore 6X DXR3
Western Digital 40 GB HDD

Now, I got Windows 98SE to load right after a clean format, but the computer just randomly reboots for no apparent reason. Now, I've tried running windows with nothing plugged in except my video card and I get the same thing. I've switched video cards, same thing. I've messed with every possible setting in the bios including all the irq settings, same thing. I've swapped memory, same thing. All updated drivers? Computer still reboots randomly.

Well, ok Windows98 wont' work, lets upgrade to XP pro. I get to the part where it says "completing installation" CRASH! Blue screen of death. Something about irq not less or equal. No idea what that means, I've gone thru and changed every friggin irq setting I could and it still crashes while trying to install. So, I'm stuck with a new computer that randomly reboots, and won't install Win XP. Can anyone please, please help me?

Make sure you haven't left a screw or something rolling around in your case when you rebuilt your pc. if that isn't the case. go into bios and set it to default settings and see if that does it. If it does work after that go back into bios and set one option at a time to enable till it locks up again. second. are you sure you seated your Heatsink on your athlon correctly, maybe its overheating.

I have the same problem. I have 3 computers, all different makes, which randomlly reboot. There is nothing obvious. These are all factory build pc's. I have virus checked all of them and that did not show anything up. I will try the bios reset but i am not holding up much hope for it. Is there any other things i could try??
