Is there any way for me to install Winddows 98 on a hard drive that I am using for a slave. I need to do this because I can't get 98 on there with just that drive hooked up. I am running Xp and when I try to install it it says you cannot do this from within windows.

Hey Brandon S,
If I understand you right, you have XP on a master and want to put 98 on a slave. OK, here is what you have to do. Disconnect your Master Hard drive and move your slave to where you removed the master. Remember to adjust your jumper on your slave to master. Then you should be able to boot off of just the one drive. Format it and begin setup. It's as simple as that. Any questions, just post back.
good luck

To have a dual boot system with WinXP and Win98 you need to install Win98 `first' on the C: drive. Then install WinXP either on the second drive or a separate partition on the first drive.
It's a Microsoft rule that older OSs have to be installed first.

The program ctbios will help you find the motherboard maker and chipset used in your computer from the bios information

you can install 98 after xp but not from windows.
You will need some multiboot software and partitioning software and a boot disk.
You will need to hide the xp partition before you try and install 98.
I have xp, 98, and a linux partition.

Getting side tracked there, to answer your question.. You can run 98 from a slave drive if your multi boot software allows this, or perhaps just your bios. (I think Boot Magic lets you do this if you configure it properly).
However, to install 98 on a slave drive is a problem. If I remember correctly, the install fails with something like an su38 error or something similar. I found that I have to install 98 on the master drive and then move it to the slave drive (either by installing on the master and copying the partition to the slave, or making the slave the master and installing, then putting it back to slave.)
