I have just bought a pc for storage, it has windows 98 on it. The c drive is password protected, and I can't contact the previous owner. Besides fdisk and format, is there a way to break the password protection, or get around it? -thanks!

If it is a BIOS password, which is what NT is implying in the above post, you wouldn't be able to boot with a floppy and reformat. But you imply in your post that this is an option.

When does this password request appear? Can you boot from a floppy without getting the password request?

Remove battery on motherboard and wait for all CMOS settings to be lost or use motherboard jumper. Before clearing CMOS view bootup configuration info and note hard drive and other config. info. because all setup info must be re-entered after CMOS is cleared.

If it's Award BIOS the default password is

This should get you into BIOS so that you can change the password.
