My computer has been getting worse and worse, so I decided to reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows 98 and the Millenium upgrade.

All goes well with the reformating and the installation of windows 98. When I upgrade to Millenium after the install and the computer reboots it comes up with VXD errors. I can only reboot in safe mode.

My choice when doing the upgrade to millenium is to delete all the windows 98 files instead of saving them, could this be part of the problem?

The exact error is:

An exception OE has occurred at 0028:C0058541 in VxD VNETBIOS(01) + 00000B8D. This was called from 0028:C024C58B in VxD VMM(OC) + 0000058B.

Is this a driver related issue? I noticed that there are a bunch of device errors once I reformat and load windows 98. It looks like I need to load in new drivers for my sound card and monitor and NIC.

Is having driver issues not resolved and then upgrading to ME the problem?

When you deleted .. you caused yourself a bunch of problems. You'll need to reinstall drivers for the items missing. VNETBIOS is your NIC card and Client, etc. I can't imagine why you put ME on in place of Win98. To me, ME's just so much cr** .. cartoonie stuff, etc. but you pays your money and you takes your choice, I guess.

I was just thinking the same. Not that I know anything about WinME but there seems to be problems.
I have just built a new system and I had bought WindowsXP home, but after reading about all the trouble people are having with XP I decided to stick to good/bad old Win98 :-)And it work fine, no problems so far. I've a new Matrox graphics card with Multiple monitor functions. Windows98 handles that too. So far I have installed only a few programs, so I have to wait a while to see if anything happens.
There is one thing I've learned, NEVER shut down Windows with a program or a map open, because it may keep popping every time you start your computer, and you can't stop it, except by reinstalling.

Just in case you didn't know ... You do not have to install win98 to upgrade to ME. Format and run the WinME install. During the install you will be asked for proof of prior ownership. Insert the win98 CD in the drive and it will be accepted as proof.

Follow Jim's advice in reply #5. This will give you a clean install, rather than an upgrade.

Generally speaking, people who installed Win ME as a clean install swear BY it, while those who installed it as an upgrade swear AT it.

Don't forget Dave there is to Upgrades to Windows ME.There was a 49.99 version for 98 and 98SE.Then there was the one for like 99.99 it was for the upgrade from 95.But anyway not sure if the 49.99 will do the clean install.Your right i bought the upgrade the 49.99 in the blue Box.I swore at it l.o.l i got mad and broke the disk!!Now i don't have it.I would have liked to try and see if the full install would have to worked with the 98 CD.

I have a feeling I'm still going to end up with the same problems to fix even with a clean install of ME. Which is to replace all the drivers I'm missing.

The biggest problem I am having with that is trying to identify what the actual hard ware is to match the driver with it. I've examined things like my sound card with a microscope (LOL) and still can't identify much other than it is a Turtle Beach.

Would you recommend AIDA32 or something else that you can use to identify the actual hardware in my computer?

Hi there.

I think it is time for you to bite the bullet.

Boot to floppy (DOS), FDisk and reformat and then do a clean install of the OS of your choice. That will load all the necessary drivers to make all work well.

Go to Microsoft update site and download all the updates and Bob's your uncle.

If I may make a suggestion. If you decide to stay with OS 9XXX then acquire a copy of Roxio GoBack......Best little program ever devised.

If you go for WinME or XP, they have a built in Restore program which does the same thing....almost.

Eitherway, it WILL save a lot of future heart ache.

I run both, ME on the PC and Win 98 on the Laptop and the only time that I encounter any problem is when I start to fiddle with things and something goes wrong. Then usually one of the above mentioned programs pull me out of the excrement.

Regards

As for your Turtle Beach Soundcard, try
this site. There is a link at the bottom of the page to help you identify your particular Turtle Beach card.
