I just downloaded the patch and installed it and it still wont shut down. It gets to the "Windows is shutting down" splash screen and just sits there :-\ Any other ideas like power settings or something that can change this?

goto start run and type "msconfig". on the first tsb click advanced or it may say options not sure. find the the box that says fast shutddown or disable fast shutdown and place a checkmark there. click osk and then restart

I had this problem for ages - tried all the microsoft fixes nothing worked.

I read some where that this is a bios - win98 issue.
So I went searching for a bios upgrade for my system. At the "Award" bios web site I found a bios upgrade which specifically targeted the shutdown issue.

I flashed my bios with the upgrade and now win98 works fine.

Please note you have to find a bios update which matches you motherboard, or you can have major problems.

Also note I had to format the hard drive and reinstall win98 - I tried to just reinstall over existing setup and it wouldn't shut down.

Again that may be just system specific. I would try a reinstall before a format.
