I am experiencing a display problem with my Windows 98 laptop. I am seeing the full screen, but all images are magnified, and colors are not as sharp as normal (the screen looks like it would if I were running in safe mode).

This started following my installation of a Lexar JumpDrive in the laptop's USB port (my laptop is a Dell Latitude, 400 mHz CPU, 96 MB RAM, 10GB HD). When I go to Control Panel>Display>Settings tab, the only options I have in the Colors drop-down are "16 Colors" and "2 Colors." Is this a driver problem? If so, please let me know how to remedy this. Thank you.

Hello,
Yes, you are correct, this is a driver problem. Somehow your video driver got corrupted and reverted back to the standard driver. Go into system properties and remove your display adapter.(To get to the system properties, hold down the windows key and hit the pause/break key then click on device manager) Then reboot and see if it reinstalls the correct driver.
If not, you'll have to find the video driver for it. Should be on the installation or recovery CD you got with the laptop. If you don't have them, you can download it from driverguide.com.
Good Luck,

Thank you. This helped, in that the icons on the desktop are now a normal size. However, the background (Clouds, stretch) still seems a bit garbled, and the fonts on the desktop seem to be smaller than I remember them. Finally, the icons on the status bar (lower right corner) are garbled as well. Are there other adjustments that need to be made in order for all items to display properly? Please advise, and thanks again for your help.

Hi,
Do a search for a file called Shelliconcache. It'll be in your C:\Windows directory somewhere. When you find it, delete it and restart your computer. Windows will automatically re-create the file. This usually works when your icons are all garbled.
Good Luck,

Another thing,
Play around with your screen resolution and see if this resolves the problem. Do you have more than 16 colors yet? If you don't, you'll need a different driver.

I do have more than 16 color resolution - I now have the options of 256 colors, 24-bit true color, and 16-bit true color. So we've made progress on that front.

As for the Shelliconcache file, I ran a search but was unable to find it. Any other files that might be causing this issue?

Thank you.

Hey Jeff,
When you did your search, did you search through your hard drive, or just a document folder? You need to search through your hard drive to find it.As i was saying, it should be in your C:\Windows directory. As far as I know, Windows needs that file and it should be there.
It is a hidden file, so go into Windows Explorer, located in the start menu within the programs sub-menu. Once that is opened, click on Windows Explorer up top. Then go to Folder Options. Once there, click on the View tab and put a dot next to Show all files. This will allow you to view hidden and system files. Once that is done, you'll be able to find ShellIconcache. Post back with results.
Good Luck,

Sorry, I made a mistake. When you open windows explorer, click the View button up top. I got a little ahead of myself there.

No problem - I was able to figure that one out...

As for the fix, it seems to have worked. I located and deleted this file, and everything appears to be working fine again. I'll let you know if there are any other problems, but at this point, I think I'm all set.

Thank you again for all your help - much appreciated.

Hi everyone,
I am having the same problems as Jeff. I deleted the display adapter and this didn't fix it. I can't locate the shelliconcache file. What type of file is this? I have been trying to get my system up and running for 1 1/2 weeks and I am about at my wits end. Any help is very appreciated!

Hi,

i just installed windows on my new laptop and i only have a small window in the middle of the screen. I don't know how to change it to full screen.

Also, I have simmilar problem as the people above: in display properties it only shows 2 and 16 colors. And I cannot change the screen area - it stays at 640 by 480 pixels :( it all looks awful!

I'd be so thankful for any help!

take care
Adam
