I bought a used laptop and dont know the username or password is it possible to get into this computer or is it no good to me. Please help
I assume it doesn't make it to Windows so you have a BIOS password. Didn't the previous owner know the password either? If he/she didn't then its not so surprising it was up for sale.
You will need to establish the procedure for resetting BIOS. Google should help but someone might come along who knows that particular machine.
Just press Escape or Cancel. The password is the Windows Userid and password as they clearly stated in the initial post. Which as most of us know in 98 doesn't really stop you from using the computer (though I think the windows help files say you can't install anything if you do that, talk about a load of crap :P)
Once your in Simply delete any files with a .pwl extension or create another account if you want (personally I'd just delete the pwl's and be done with them). HTH Regards Lupin3rd
If this equals that, then why does that equal this?
As mentioned in the other posts, it's far from definitive what OS or type of passsword is involved and that your initial advice has already been offered (twice)
"as they clearly stated in the initial post."
Wow - - "clearly"? Rarely (if ever) would that be my first choice of words here
I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter.
The poster said he/she was "unable to get into the computer" and the rest was open to intepretation.
If this was the windows password then they would have been presented, among other things, with a Cancel button (which is hard to miss). I'd have been surprised if even a computer newbie wouldn't have tried hitting that before posting. It takes more skill to get to computing.net
On this basis, the possibility that this was a BIOS password was clearly stated as an "assumption" in #2.
To some extent we have now gone round both loops. The poster only "thinks" this is W98 and has not returned.
