Windows 98 freezes up during boot

Frequently but not always, when I start up my computer, windows will run normally to the "Windows 98" logo page, then freezes up. I have to shut down the computer and re-boot. Sometimes it will come up OK, but lately it is getting much more difficult to get it to boot into anything but the "Safe Mode". How can I prevent this?

A problem like that is very difficult to fix without any real details. Did this problem just start occurring out of the blue or did it start happening after you installed some software package or installed a video camera, scanner, etc.. ?
my computer freezes up during a program, everything freezes, keyboard and the only way to shut down is the Off key. Hsd technican in and he replaced my internet card but it still freezes. I have tons of space on my c drive and have g, e, f, g, h, and i empty. it has 64 meg. Also I am a new user, so this boggles my mind. Help.
