I hope someone can help me fix this. Windows 98 freezes after loading programs. I see the desktop, but when I click an icon or Start button, all freezes and mouse disappears. This happened a few times. (Clue? I have Norton SystemWorks 2000, but the computer has worked with it before.) Thanks for any help.

boot into safe mode and see if it freezes if it does'nt then go to start,run and type msconfig. click on startup and uncheck every thing exept registry and systray. reboot and if it dont freeze go back and recheck each item one at a time rebooting each time till u find the one that freezes the pc. leave that one unchecked.

Thanks, but I seem to have more severe problems that are weird and appear random. When restart, computer freezes with "windows shutting down" on screen. After startup one of the following always happens: *monitor shows "no signal input," but this doesn't happen if I try again after 30 minutes *startup screen freezes on components scroll *W98 loads, but only some icons appear, and no C-drive icon or mouse pointer *during startup, monitor cuts to standby mode before desktop appears I'm not sure how to reinstall windows without a functioning desktop. Appreciate any feedback. I'm baffled. jim
