Here is a listing of the 9x series defaults. Not sure if that is what you want.

Have you got W98SE on there yet?

If so, it is essential that you retain the ones with the "red letter A" icon which are system fonts (around 20 of them). Problems can arise if you remove them.

If not, shout back and I'll get their names off this machine.

Windows installs other fonts too, as per post #1.

Required fonts:

- Arial
- Courier New
- Symbol
- Times New Roman
- Tahoma
- WingDings

Don't know where i learned the above but this site

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314960

lists

-MS Serif
-MS Sans Serif

as well and does not list Tahoma. And as Derek says, all the .fon files are needed by the system.

Now i see:

-MS Serif
-MS Sans Serif

are actually .fon files. Another very nice one to keep is the News Gothic MT (NWGTH..) which looks really nice for the icon text in bold italic (Western), especially in Explorer. This font disappeared in XP.
