Yes, I know this is an antique but I set it up for my student daughter to write papers and do e-mail on. The OS works fine, but the floppy disk can only be accessed from DOS. If you try to access it from Windows, it hesitates for several minutes, then gives an error "A is not accessible". During the pause, the floppy disk drive labors, attempting to read the disk. From DOS, it works perfectly. The newly installed CD-ROM drive works fine (and is installed on the secondary IDE connection through its own cable).
I've checked the device manager, which reports that the floppy disk is working correctly. I've gone through all the IRQ's, memory addresses, etc. and cannot see a conflict. I've formatted the drive and reinstalled. I've removed the sound card and modem and tried rebooting under the simpler configuration. Nothing works. Any ideas?

This is really reaching, but ... Is the floppy defined correctly in the Bios? I would think it would confuse Dos also if it isn't, but who knows.

Hi Max,
The setup utility doesn't allow you to do much on this machine but the floppy drive reports back installed correctly, and it does work in DOS. There are no conflicts apparent from either the BIOS or windows. Also, I've tried uninstalling the controller in device manager and rebooting. Windows finds the device and installs it, but it still doesn't work.

Have you tried removing both the floppy disk controller , and the floppy drive in device
manager and then rebooting the computer ?
Also it may help to check that windows is set to detect new floppy drives on bootup
"start" "settings" "control panel" "system"
"performance tab" "file system" "floppy disk tab" then put a check mark in the box to select it.
*HTH*
