Hi,
I am having a problem booting up in Windows 98. The computer boots up to the "Windows 98" loading screen, and then it makes a "click" noise and turns off. Any ideas on why this is happening and how I could fix it? Thanks in advance. Any help would be greatly appreciated

you don't have a floppy or cd in any drive right? maybe try writing down your bios settings and reset to default.
make HD your first boot device there, is there a network boot? are you on a network?

Hi,
Thank you very much for the quick reply. No, there is not anything in any of the drives. I am not on a network. It is just a single boot. It goes as far as the loading screen, but then just turns off. Any ideas? Thanks again

Hi Subhash, bigtallboy, hi everyone,Can you start Windows in Safe mode? if so, is there any yellow icon in Device Manager (right click on "My Computer"/Properties/Device Manager tab)?
Could you ask for step by step or Bootlog Start (Start Menu pressing F8)?
Have a good day,

hello shubhas,
Do what Gerard suggested. If you can boot into safe mode, your problem is probably software related; but run scanreg anyway to check the hard disk surface and hopefully it will repair your ini files too(not too sure). If that fails, type in "scareg/fix" from the command promt to fix the registry. And check your Autoexec.bat file. See if you can find a strange command there that would cause your computer to shutdown or restart. If all else fails, you can always reinstall w98 over the existing system, your applications should work fine unless your registry is damaged. Let me know what happens.

RayRay,
Thank you for your reply. I will try those things and let you guys know. The problem happend a couple of days back, and right now, I am out of town, so it will take me a couple of days before I can test, but thank you very much for the input. I will certainly let you guys know.

I forgot to mention one other option. Try typing in "scanreg/restore". That should restore your registry to its state when you last successfully started your computer.

Hi all,
Well, what happend is that my cable company got hacked and the email with subject "admin@cox.net". Anyway, it messed up my wininit.exe file, so I ended up reinstalling. All good now. Thanks much for the help.
