i have a problem. when i start up the computer it say no operating system found. this is my father inlaws computer. so i took the hd home and set it to slave and hooked it up to my computer to see if his operating system was still there and his files and when i went to my computer to see if it listed the hd there it didn't. so i set it to master and unplugged all my hd's and started it up it said: disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter. any help on this is greatly appreicated. i have no idea how to fix this or if i can save his files that are on the hd.

Hi,
When you hooked it up to your computer, did you go into the BIOS and see if your system recognised it? Also is the hard drive making any unusual sounds? This is also a sign of a low CMOS battery. If your CMOS battery gets low, it loses the stored settings in your BIOS and therefore won't see any hardware. If none of this works, you may indeed have a case of the bad hard drive, but let's not jump to any conclusions yet.
Good Luck,
~winipcfg

Put the hard drive back in your father's computer jumpered the way it was before.
Now boot up with a 98 boot disk. At the A:> prompt type this:
fdisk /mbr (enter)
then type: sys C: (enter)
Pop out the floppy and reboot.
Post back and tell us what happened.
Good Luck

When i first started it up it reconized it. but thats when the cpu is first starting up. when it is detecting the hd's,floppy,cdrom etc. i can't remenber if it showed up in the bios or not will have to check tonight. but i did notice last night when i was working on it that i don't think it made any sound but it had a green light on the hd itself that was flashing. don't know if that means anything.

Hi y'all,
Steve
*disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter*
Make sure you have a workable bootdisk...Try it in your PC to test it..If you need one...
bootdisk.com
Also make sure your cables are connected propably...Haste makes waste:-)
See if it is in fdisk...Bring up fdisk and choose #4 for info on the H/D...Happy Holidays

Can you please tell me step by step. sorry to be a pain just want to make sure i do this right.

Whatever system this hard drive is in, check the date and time in the bios. If this is correct, then a failing battery can be dismissed for the moment. Then ensure the drive jumpers are set properly for it's position on the IDE bus. Then, set the drive parameters in bios to AUTO, or use the IDE Auto Detect function is the bios has it.
Once the above is established, boot with a bootdisk. At the A:\> prompt type in;
fdisk
then choose Large Disk Support. (Usually just hit enter.)
Then choose option 5 to change to the correct hard drive if your not already there.
Then choose option 4. Post what you get as info.

When i was working on it it would not let me in bios. f8,del,f10 none of those would get me in bios. it just kept saying no operating system found.

Hi y'all
steve,
You may consider using the WINDOWS 98 Starup Disk to copy the Command.com to the C:\ and C:\Windows
1.Insert Win98 Startup Disk in A: drive
2.At C:\> Prompt type in A: and then press [ENTER]
3.At A: Prompt type the copy command to copy the Command.com to the root of C: drive and its Windows Folder.
a. A:\>Copy A:Command.com C:Command.com [ENTER]
b. A:\>Copy A:Command.com C:\Windoows\Command.com [ENTER]
4.Remove the Windows98 Startup Disk and press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to Restart the computer.
Happy Holidays

What if i do this?
i put in the windows 98 bootdisk and at the
a: type a:sys c: will that work?

Before you can do ~anything~ with the drive you have to have it recognized in *a* bios, in *a* machine.
Get it set up properly in one machine and then things can progress from there. Only then will any of the above suggestions take substance.

well i put the windows 98 boot disk in and i could see the directories but everytime i ran fdisk it would give me the message "error reading disk" i guess the hd is bad?

If the drive is now recognized by a bios in a machine;
Boot with the 98 boot disk. When you get the A:\> prompt, type in;
dir/a/w/o/p c:\
Do you get a listing of directories and files?
If you do, then fdisk should work. If it doesn't the fdisk on your floppy or the floppy itself may be flakey. Try another boot disk/floppy.
If you don't see any directories/files on c:, try typing in (at the A:\> prompt);
scandisk c:
Again, the above presupposes that the bios sees the drive. If it does, and fdisk won't work, download delpart.exe from my webspace (it's in the header of my replies) and copy it to your floppy and run that. It will recognize partitions that fdisk sometimes won't.
Report back.

When i was working on it last night when i first put in the boot disk it said something about no active partion or no partion on the drive. or something like that can't remenber word for word. could that be a problem?

OK, things are still not clear (at least to me).
Does the bios recognize the drive as a hardware device?
(If it does, the drive will be listed on your POST screen.) (Power On Self Test) Partitions don't matter at this point, we have to know if the actual HARDWARE is recognized.
"....when i first put in the boot disk it said something about no active partion or no partion on the drive."
What did you type in to get this response?
Please answer these two questions.
