I was wondering if Windows 96 is real or not, I have seen on a site that they might be adding windows 96 and they said that it had windows 95 cab files and was a step towards windows 98 and I guess it had better plug and play or something. I was just wondering if someone knew of any websites that had some info about it.

Windows 96 was never a real Microsoft product. Sounds like the website is altering Win95 and giving it a new, made-up name...

From what I've read it was one of the stepping stones between W95 & W98 but the name W96 was never given any official status or marketted as such. Just an internal MS title.

I think it is also true to say that MS always had something along the lines of "what became W98" in mind but issued W95 when it was deemed reasonable, in order to get some bucks in the bank.

I also saw that website. Reading between the lines I don't think the website actually concocted it. Sounds more like a few copies of "so called" W96 crept out of the backdoor.

Who knows, on a low spec machine it might have some advantages over W95.

I got this info off of OldOS, I was just wondering if anyone knew of other websites that had info about win96. I know all about 95,98,ME,NT,2000,XP being the only released versions but if 96 did exist it would be nice to try, I think microsoft has lots of beta versions of many different OS's. Win95 was supposed to be released in 93, imagine how many betas there are for that, and XP had many betas before it's release.

I'm now rather inclined to throw a wet blanket over this topic. I stumbled across the website when I was searching for somthing else fairly recently, but unfortunately I never never saved the URL and have no idea how I got to it.

I've tried "deliberately" searching for it and got stacks of irrelevant links. I spotted these two oldies, one of which plays it right down and the other positively warns against the dangers of installing any such thing.

What I originally saw seemed quite convincing at the time, but then all good hoaxes or scams are.....

On reflection I reckon Bobthearch was probably right - sorry folks.

It was probably W95B, which was released in 1996.
