Tried everything! Need HELP!!
Starts normally then goed to WIN 95 locon screen for 5 sec then says that HIMEM.SYS is missing. Then c:\> appears.
What do I do?SR

What happened prior to this? THerein lies your answer. Think back and be specific.
You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users

I can send file for "very first" W95 edition if need be, but there may be other problems (see #1).
DerekW

I was using my computer and then a box came uo that said that i needed to restart my computer. So I did without thinking about it. As it restarted normally then went to the Windows 95 icon for 5 secs then it said that the HIMEM.SYS was missing.
I tried what ham30 asked and it still says that the HIMEM.SYS was missing. What do I do now?
SR

I think you "accidentally" downlaoded some kind of cr*pware from the internet and ran it without thinking. Do you have adware/spyware/virus scanners updated and in use?

Also, I think you should check to see if the file is really missing. Tap F8 key whilst booting then select one of the two command prompts from the startup menu.
Type:
dir c:\windows\himem.sys
Hit Return key.
See if it says that the file is there (it should show date and size and this info would be useful).

I do not have internet hooked up to my computer so there was no way i could have downloaded anything.
I tyed:
dir c:\windows\himem.sys
This is what came up after.Volume in Drive C is NOT FOUND
Volume Serial Number is 0642-1CFB
Directory of C:\WindowsHIMEM SYS 33,191 08-24-96 11:11a
1 file(s) 33,191 bytes
0 file(s) 3,688.49 MB FreeThat is exactly what it said.
Then the c:\> showed up.
What do i do next?SR

Well, it seems the file is there. It could be corrupted but I'll assume it's OK for now. There is also a possibility of RAM trouble but we'll leave that on the back burner for now as well.
The "Volume in Drive C is NOT FOUND" is a bit odd.
Firstly (nothing lost, but I'm none too hopeful) bootup with a W95 startup floppy in the drive then type:
sys c: (and hit Return key).If you haven't got a floppy you've made in the past then download a W95 bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com
You have to "make" the floppy from the download on some other machine (not just copy the download onto the floppy).
See if this helps, otherwise I need some more info. I'm wondering if the file msdos.sys is corrupted or missing, so from a c prompt type these (usual Return key after each command):
attrib -r -h -s msdos.bak
attrib -r -h -s msdos.sys
(those just make the files visible)
Now type:
dir c:\msdos.bak
dir c:\msdos.sys
Let me know what it says about each file (date & size info). The first command is to see if you have a backup file on there - usually there is one.
DerekW

Assuming 'drive not found' is a (really "clever") drive label
The path to himem.sys is contained (or should be) in c:\msdos.sys. On occasion this file gets abbreviated and Windows can't find anything and gives up.
Ham's instructions (#3) should have temporarily resolved that, but there is a chance that the information was not entered exactly.
Try entering this:
type c:\msdos.sys
... and if there is only a line or so of output, that is likely the problem, and you need a 'full' version of msdos.sys
Resist the temptation to close your request for help with semantically-null questions like “Can anyone help me?”

I tried:
dir c:\msdos.bak and dir c:\msdos.sys
both of them saidVolume in Drive C is NOT FOUND
Volume Serial Number is 0642-1CFB
Directory of C:\File not found 3,688.49 MB Free
Then:
C:\> came up

Are you certain you did the two attrib lines first, because I'm a bit surprised both were missing? That is what you'll get with the attribs on.
DerekW

... and did you try sys c: from a bootdisk?
I'm gonna have to go now (gone 3am in UK).
If it comes to the crunch I've a couple of files I can send you but I'd sooner use the msdos.bak (backup file) if it turns out to be there.Recap, type the following two lines and hit Return after each one (note the spaces):
attrib -r -h -s c:\msdos.bak
dir c:\msdos.bak
... then post back results.
DerekW

I went back and tried everything that you suggested from the previous replies. This is what i found out.
I typed:attrib -r -h -s msdos.bak
Reply: File not Found -msdos.bakattrib -r -h -s msdos.sys
Reply: File not Found -msdos.systype c:\msdos.sys
Reply: File not Found -c:\msdos.sysattrib -r -h -s c:\msdos.bak
Reply: File not Found -c:\msdos.bakdir c:\mosdos.bak
Reply:
Volume in Drive C is Not found

SR

Well, you quite clearly got it right so you have no msdos.sys (or msdos.bak) file in your system. It's not surprising you are in trouble.
I'll email the file with instructions.
DerekW

Just in case anyone on the forum is still watching.....
Had to opt for email. Deduced that this was W95 OSR2.
Concocted an msdos.sys file from my W98SE version (changed Windows version line) and this brought the machine up.Still following up some reports about a couple of missing files on boot up. Need to decide if the files are needed or whether to try to stop W95 reporting them.
