It is detecting that you have a previous operating system still on your PC and is asking you to run the upgrade version of win 98 (which used to be a bit cheaper). You have probably got the "clean install" version so you will probaly have to re format your harddrive before it will install

Yes, the Upgrade and OEM (problably what you have) are different editions...

Assuming you're machine's bootable from CD:

Boot from the Win98cd, then type from a dos prompt (without the quotes):

"rename c:\windows\win.com win.old"
"rename c:\windows\setupx.dll setupx.old"

Now switch to the cdrom drive letter

Then type:

"cd win98"
"setup"

Strongly advise that you have a backup made before you do this...

I've never seen or heard of anyone doing this before:

"rename c:\windows\setupx.dll setupx.old"

If Win95 is still functional, just bootup, then go to Start > Search > Files or Folders & search for WIN.COM (there may be more than one entry because some programs create a backup). Rename ALL entries to WIN.OLD, then reboot & install Win98.

NOTE: once WIN.COM is renamed to WIN.OLD, you will no longer be able to boot into Win95

You do *NOT* need to format your drive. Doing so will result in you losing any data you might want to save as well as any non MS drivers which you may or may not still have lying around on floppies or cd's.

"rename c:\windows\setupx.dll setupx.old"

This is a new one on me too. T-R-A, Can you provide a basis for this?

Not sure of the reason, but I had similar problems before (where renaming just "win.com" didn't solve the problem, but renaming "setupx.dll" in addition did). Haven't had to use that method for a while, since I found the Win98SE upgrade CD...

If more than one win file is in one folder you won't be able to rename them all to win.old

The backups are unimportant anyway as they will not be functional. Just name win.com to win.old
