If you are using a 486 chances are that you probably need to install your memory in pairs. If that's not it, then you may have the simm in the wrong slot. It is important that you don't skip a slot between existing memory and the new memory. If you don't have your manual, check compaq's website to see that you are using the correct type of memory. It should be either parity or non-parity so be sure that you bought the right type. Hope this points you in the right direction.
