Friend's computer crashed and the dealer reinstalled a newer version of W95 on the hard drive but didn't give him the CD. Due to a virus attack, the present version of Windows 95 became corrupt but when he attempts to reinstall the older version of W95 overtop the one the dealer installed, it just won't work. Any suggestions as to how to uninstall W95 and reinstall it correctly?

you need to reformat the hardrive and then install windows again
www.bootdisk.com
download a win95 boot system disk with cd-rom drivers included
boot to a:
a:\format c:/s [note the forward slash
then, reboot, go back and choose cd-rom support this boot.l

If you do format, then you will need proof of a prior installation of Windows to do the install. The first floppy of a Win3x set of installation floppies will work. You wil also need a Product Key.

how badly do you want to keep that data??
if you format its gone...along w/ drivers ect.
there are two ways to go about this
NOTE:whats the status--virus gone?
you could
1) install to a new directory
--write if you need the correct way to do this
2)upgrade to windows98--its not always best to upgrade a broken machine but it may be worth a try--MS is dropping support for 95 at the end of the year anyway

When you reinstall win95,don't let it install into the default folder(c:\windows). Rename it "Win" or whatever you like. It will install anew into that folder. When you get it up and running--delete the old "windows folder".

Carl,
Yeah nice one but wouldn't it be better to just boot in dos rename windows winold and then run windows setup and load wins to wondows!!
Then delete winold!
Who wants a O/S called "Win" or whatever !!
You will need to reload drivers and maybe some of you're software but you data will still be there.
Format and/or Reinstall
See footnote on reinstall
without lose of drivers and data
