I am having problems getting Windows 95, 98 and NT 4.0 to run on a AMD K6-2 300MHz processor. The system keeps crashing!!!! Does anyone know any fixes to the problem?
AMD says it could be a memory problem and to test it lower the Bus speed

There can be a mem problem, but this may help too with Win95 (even it's mainly for 350MHz &up): http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/k623d/win95_update_k6.html.

Howdy, I would check and make sure you have all your jumper settings right, If the chip is over clocked or the voltage is not set right these types of problems will occur. SO double check your jumper settings.
Laters,
Kevin The Tech Dude.

If you have a PC Chips motherboard, that could be the problem too. I've read a lot about them at hardwarecentral.com, and I am one of many that wishes they hadn't bought one.
Also, I read that some AMD K6-2 chips were only stable at 66 MHZ.

hi y'all
i had the same problem with my amdk62-350, under win95 osr2, but after downloading and installing the patch....everything was fine...

If you have W95b and a motherboard with a VIA chipset, there is a patch from AMD to fix it. AmdK6upd.exe

Hi Everybody! Here are some hints when using AMD processors (hope they're useful)
AMD K6 will not work well on motherboards with on board display drivers. K6 266 simply won't work; K6 300 runs within unexpected crashes (but you must set the bus speed to 60 MHZ and the multiplier to 5x - DO NOT try to set it at 66/4.5, it doesn't work).
K6 and K6-2 need core voltage selector set to 2.2V.
Some older motherboards (before April/98) might need a Bios upgrade for the K6 based system run without crashes.
It also seems to me that K6 runs problematic when bus speed is 66MHz. I don't care what AMD says, but I had a crashing K6 system, and changed the memory many times (tried DIMM, SIMM, edo, etc., etc.). The only way I find to "fix" was to lower the bus speed to 60Mhz.

I just finished putting together a system
that used an AMDK6-2 350MHz CPU and a Tyan
S1590S 'Trinity' MB. There were too problems
with it.. 1: The Win95 timing issue that was
fixed with the amdk6upd.exe patch from MS.
2: Was the BIOS on the Tyan board, the older
version 1.12 and older doesn't support AMD
300+, but version 1.12b and 1.14 work great.
Check the BIOS! A lot of system techs have
been having problems like this and some of
them can be corrected by reducing the FSB
clock, but before you slow it down make sure
your BIOS isn't the problem.

My K6-2 300 is fairly new (October 98), and the motherboard is a PC Chips M577. It works fine at 3*100 as long as the external cache is disabled. I would ask for a board replacement, except I've read so many people that have had problems with PC Chips boards that I'd probably get one that's not as good as this one. I've been running the system for quite a while with no problems since turning the cache off.

I And my friend both bought AMD K6-2's (a 400 and a 450). We are both running them on an ASUS P5A with 64M 100MHz RAM. And Windows 98 crashes CONSTANTLY! I used to be a LAN Admin so I know a fair amount about hardware but I can't for the life of me figure out why in the hell this thing crashes so often! It's gotta be an AMD problem though and it really pisses me off that they'd sell a product that isn't even remotely stable!

I recently purchased a fic 503+ with a k6 2 400 but win 98 keeps bringing up OE errors and crashes! HelP!

Rajan,
I have the same mother board and OS with a K6-2 350 overclocked to 400 at 2.2 volts. Processors are not made to run a given speed, they are "tested" to decide at which speed they run best. My buddy has an OEM 400 that he bought used and it needs 2.3 Volts to run stable. Make sure your voltage is set to 2.2. If that doesn't work move it up to 2.3. It won't hurt the chip as long as you have a good heatsink & fan. Also you could have some supposed "PC 100" SDRAM. Try moving your SDRAM1 Jumper to the 1-2 position and the CLK4 to the 2-3 position. This will treat it as 66Mhz SDRAM. The next step would be to reinstall windows. A list of all your hardware would really help.

I have K6-2 400 on an ASUS P5a-b board, with 64MB PC-100 RAM. I am using RIVA TnT video. I installed everything with the "default" settings. I'm running Win98. Computer is now just freezing all the time, requiring reboot. Any help out there? Thanks

I have an AMD K6-2 333Mhz CPU in a Gigabyte G5AA board (Aladin 5 chipset), running Win95 OSR2 with update patch.
I did have some initial problems with crashes that scrambled some HD files (Ouch!), but this was tracked down to a stick of DIMM memory that wasn't PC100 speed. After changing it for some that was GUARANTEED 100Mhz I have had NO crashes, zero, zilch, none. In fact after a week or so trouble free, I upped the speed to 350Mhz and still haven't had a single glitch in the last 2 months. That's daily use recording and manipulating BIG audio files.
Sorry to hear that so many of you are having trouble, but don't lay all the blame on AMD. There are a lot of mediocre socket7 boards out there, and a fair bit of shakey SDRAM.
Check that your motherboard has 6nanosecond cache chip(s) fitted (marked -6). 7 or 8 nanosecond parts will give you problems at bus speeds over 66Mhz.
I have also found that 3D winbench98 is a really good check of system stability. If you can run that without a hitch, you've got a good system.Best of luck guys, Pete.

Hey,
I have a AMD K6-2 450, running on a pcchips m577 board w/1mb cache, all settings set as fast as possible. Also have 128mb pc100 sdram, I have the cpu set at 100mhz bus, with a 4.5 mult. and set on 2.4v (450 only). Windows 95c is installed and it runs perfect, at first i had lots of explorer errors, IE5 took care of those, now its just smooth sailing. I work at The Computer Shack, if you have any questions as to the rest of my config, email me, laterBrandon

I'd just like to add to the stability of AMD chips. I have now used 386, 486, 586 and K6/K6-2 chips from AMD and found them all to be stable if jumper settings are correct.
The Win '95 problem is fixed by the update available from AMDs website. Win '98 does not have this problem.
More times than enough, people lay blame on the AMD chip when the problem lies in poor quality memory. The gentleman I buy my memory from tests all SIMMS and DIMMS before you hand your cash over, does your supplier do this?
It's easy enough to blame the chip when there isn't an equivalent Intel chip to try a comparison with.
Fact is, there are a lot of components in a PC and any one of them could be at fault.

I have an AMD K6-2 350 and I am running Windows 98. When using Windows, I can expect it to crash at least once every hour. I've checked the jumper settings on my board, and they are all okay (my board is an Iwill XA 100 Plus. If anybody has any suggestions about solving this problem, I would be very grateful as (sods law) it tends to crash right in the middle of doing some work, or whilst downloading from the internet. PLEASE HELP ME.HELP ME!!!!!!!

I have put together a new system. Processor is AMD k6 / 2 350. MB is ASUS P5A Super Socket 7. Memory is good and stable. On first reboot of inital Win98 install, got a Windows Protection error. I renamed smartdrv.exe and rmm.pdr, which was the old fix for windows 95b (OSR2) and the Intel Based Pentium Processors. There was even a file called ios.fix from microsoft that can still be found on Gateway.com website that updated the rmm.pdr. This windows protection error should not be happening in Windows 98. I have had the RAM tested and it tests out OK. It is a single 128 PC100 Dimm. So is there an available update similar to the one provided for AMD K6 processors and Windows 95, for Windows 98?

having probs with 98 and k6-2 processor..
i get crashes to the desktop with no error messages.. pulled all cards, changed video card, changed memory, still get the same problems...

I am running an AMD K6-2 450mhz with Win 98. Most times I startup, the I freeze as soon as my wallpaper comes up. No error message, just a freeze up. If I reset and I let scandisk run, most of the time everything loads fine (although sometimes it freezes again. If I don't let scandisk run, I get the same freeze. Suggestions as to the source of the problem?

Here is a wierd problem:
*My AMD k6-2 350 will run at 400 on my FIC 503+ board. (Windows 98 runs fine)
*My AMD k6-2 400 will only run at 350 on the same board. (Windows 98 won't start)
Any ideas?

Well...
I'm not that smart when it comes to putting together a computer, but I want to ask you guys this question. Since all of you are having some kind of problem with a AMD K6-2 processor does that mean if I buy a NEW computer with this processor that I'm going to have problems with it tool. The computer I'm thinking about buying is an IBM (64 mb, 6.0 gigabyte). Is the AMD K6-2 processor not as good as a Pentium?

Same problem.
k6-2 400 aopen ax59 M/B 64 meg pc100 (8? nsec).
was getting windows protection with 95b, decided to u/g to 98 as new hard disc available.
Now machine boots and is ok but installing software uses 100% processor effort (as reported by sytem monitor) and m/c locks up during install.
Just bought this system and regretting it already, please help.

I'm facing big problem with AMD K6 2/400 & AMD K6 2/450 cpu on ASUS P5A with win98 os, every time I turn "ON" my PC, it "ALWAYS" encounter "OE" error, is matter of time within 1;2 or 3 hour after operation, could someone provide me a solution. The RAM I'm using is 64MB PC100 from Hunydai first party. HELP HELP HELP !

hi all,
Ive been running a k6-2-300 on a pc chips m577 mobo with 64 meg pc100 ram on win95b and have not encountered any problems,i have not needed any software patches, as have been said before check all jumper settings are set as per manuals.
I am surprised you are all having so many problems, as i have assembled pc,s using intel, cyrix, and amd cpu's and find my current amd k6-2-300 at least as stable as my intel pentiums. Good luck and cheers.

Hello, Just upgraded to a K6 2 400 from a k6 233, board is a Tyan s1590s trinity 100 no problems whatsoever, how ever, when I upgraded to 98 (before the CPU change) I had a HELL of a time, could not configure video and every restart had to be done twice.
The problem turned out to be in the BIOS setup under pnp, had to set "Running pnp OS? =no" to get it so stabilise, strange, but it works very well now. F.Y.I Barry

Hey!!
Praise to the people who disabled External Cache / pnp......It's works!!!!
God loves us all!!!
Also we should only run Win98, boot from the cd, DISABLE anti-virus, ex and maybe internal cache during loading.
So far my computer works when I couldn't even get past the serial # entry. Thanks and good Luck to you all!!
Kenny the K6-2 350 owner

Here is some benchmarks i did on amd-k6-2 processor and the pentium-pro processor:
-------------------------------------------
Speed Ram Processor ExecutionTime
-------------------------------------------
400Mhz 128MB AMD-K6-2 8 min 30 sec
266Mhz 264MB pent-pro 6-7 min
200Mhz 128MB pent-pro 6-7 min
--------------------------------------------
all these are gateway computers. the first one has win-98 and the rest win-95.
My program is a finite element code which i wrote in MS fortran PowerstationAny comments
Thanks

Hi.
I have a K 6 2 300 and Iwill XA100 mother board running at 100MHz bus and 300MHz processor speed. It crashes several times on W98 and i solve it running at bus speed 85MHz and 333MHz processor speed but running Linux at 333MHZ it crashes but never at 100MHz bus speed and 300MHz processor speed.

Hi all....
The ultimate fix was to find out that all
K-6 300 and above HAVE to have the right MB.
Newer boards and or updated BIOS or crashes will occur and strange fixes/bandaids will
have to be done.
SORRY but if your MB is still exchangable like mine...kewl!!
If not have someone update your BIOS.....
Be warned !!! Updating BIOS can be dangerous
and cost you your chip or MB!!
Anyway my machine runs just fine now.....
Also, some may try to run scandisk BEFORE
formatting a new HD too, it will fix boot partition problems which I had also.
And some can install the "patch" if your a 95 person.GOOD LUCK to all.......
If you still have probs and or are a cute slim woman....

I have AMD 400 on an Asus P5A M/B. Same problems wit constant crashing.
I cured it by disabling L2 cache after trying everything else.

i have win98 and a pc chips motherboard. (m598)
ihave continual problems! Ihave to start up my computer several times before it runs with stability. I also have random crashes. For example, programs like 'mprexe' 'explorer' and 'scanregw' randomly fail to start. The same error, which is 'illegal operation, invalid page fault in module kernel32.dll.' i have tried time and time again to fix this. I have reformated several times and i am sick of amd's shoddy product.
i have an amd 350 k6-2 processor, and am planning to hit it with my bat if it does not work...

I run an AMD K6-300 on a PCChips 571 motherboard with 128 megs of 100mhz ram. Just flashed the bios with new update and everything works fine.

I am running Win98 with a K6-2/350 CPU on a Tyan S1590S Trinity 100AT motherboard. The system runs great as long as I DISABLE the external cache. I'm still trying to find out why. Tyan told me I had bad cache and suggested that I exchange the board. The second board behaves the same way. Did you ever get your system to work. Does anyone know any more about this problem?

given all the above comments, has anyone achieved stability with a K62 350+, OSR2, L2 cache turned on, and 100MHz FSB???
alternatively, does anyone have success stories with the above hw and linux kernal 2+?
workable config specifics appreciated.

Just purchased an AMD K6-2 400mhz chip. Mine works fine with everything in Windows 95, 97 oem version with k6 patch until I try running two windows programs at once. The computer then freezes solid and when I reboot it, my computer has no video. I then have to pop in an old 100 mhz chip just to get the video to work again. Adjusting the speed on the 400 mhz chip does nothing for bringing back the video. I am wondering if it has something to do with I/O voltage on my motherboard being permanently set to 3.4 volts where as on the IC it states that it requires 3.3v for the I/O. The 100mhz chip and 166mhz chips I also have, both of which are AMD as well, are labeled with I/O voltage of 3.4 and I have had no problems with them. I am going to try disabling the pnp os as suggested above. I know that it is also not memory or hard drive related so I am willing to bet every single dollar I have on the fact that its the motherboard which is screwing up. I have been told that I may have some wait states and such that may be set wrong in the bios (award) but unfortunately my search for a guide to those settings has been in vain. Any suggestions or comments will be appreciated.

Any body know how to get an AMD K6 2 400 to work with windows 95 a. The microsoft patch only works with OSR 2 and above.

I just built a system with a PC100 MB and a AMD K6-2 / 400 MHz CPU. What a nightmare. I still can't get the AGP video card to run. Using an old PCI card while they replace the AGP video. Disabling the external cache seems to have worked for me, but what a waste. Anybody found a way around this?
I've heard that these chips run hot. I have a normal heat sink and CPU fan. Do I need to use heat sink paste? What is this, is there some common household substitute?
Thanks for any replies!

I'm running a AMD K6-2 /400MHz CPU on a PC100 MB w/64Mb DIMM PC100 memory. I
couldn't get the AGP video card to work (couldn't even get into CMOS), so
I'm currently running an old Diamond Stealth 2000 3D PCI card. I keep
crashing on the following error:"A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C0005338 in VXD VMM(01) +
00004338. The current application will be terminated."Is this video related? Any suggestions?
Thanks for any replies!

Hi, i just got a AMD K6-2 400MHz and 64MB of PC-100 memory. I am runing Win98 and i have the +FIC-503MotherBoard and it constantly is crashing, re-booting itself and giving me some OE ERROR messeges. WHATS WRONG AND WHAT DO I DO??!!!???!!! PLEASE E-MAIL ME AT IROLLER@GARLIC.COM IF U CAN HELP IN ANYWAY. Thanx

I finally found out how to get my system running at 450 mhz. Buy a real processor made by Intel....AMD k2-450 is a joke.

It seems to me most of the problems with this chip have to do with little things, like BIOS updates and making sure your parts are really what they should be(i.e. 100mhz SDRAM). A lot of what I read of the troubles with an AMD chip is from people with a PC CHIPS motherboards, anyone worth thier video card knows PC CHIPS makes probmatic motherboards people. As with any AGP problems, check the web, sometimes all you need is aan update with some BIOSes, while other motherboards based on a different chipset work great. I have an AMD K-6 II 450, 128 m.b. of ram, with a Samsung H.D.D. and a G400 Matrox Duelhead AGP video card (motherbaord chipset is VIA MVP3) and I have never had any problems running Window's '95b after the patch, and that is Microsoft's probelm for shipping a buggy O.S. not AMD's. I have a Intel Celeron 400 overclocked to 500mhz based on the Abit BH6 baord, running mostly the same configuration and I find no difference really, AMD makes some great chips.

Hi there!
I can run my K6-2 450 only with 350 Mhz,
I'm using Win95 A!!!, and I only can find
patches for the B Version...
can someone out there help me with this little problem?

I too have had nothing but nightmares with my K6-2/450! The jumper settings are all by the book, I've tried disabling the caches, virus protection, all that. I'm running win95B, with the patch, which really doesn't do anything, since I still get protection errors. most of the time when booting into safe mode, it reboots the machine. I will try dropping the bus speed to 66 and see if that fixes it when I get home. I'm not holding my breath tho =( I got the MB/Chip as a combo at a show, and have exchanged both, and the ram. Still no luck. Any other ideas? I will keep the board advised...

Well, got my system running, after a fashion... Its underclocked to 413, but it runs. I'm going to keep trying to work it up as close as I can, but the 100MHz bus seemed to be the problem. Which implies, I suppose that I have crappy ram...

i recently bought an amdk62 450 i tried to load win95 but kept getting ios errors
when i returned to the shop from where i got it they said i needed a patch .so why are we not told this the minute we ask for the cpu.
i tried to get my money back but they said theres nothing wrong with cpu,as it works on win98

well i bought an amdk 6 2 500khz and a gigabyte ga 5aa mother board on first boot of win 98 got vdx error and was stuck if i couldn't get it to load how do i put patch in if any took lid off and checked jumpers all seemed ok 2.2 core voltage 5x at 100mhz so tryed again with lid still off and hey it works .
its fine with lid off and plenty of air round it but put lid on and within an hour i get vdx or vhh error and yes i have got the big heat sink and fan im prepaired to run as is but if any one as same and as solved it please get in touch

I have a Soyo 5EMA+ MB running an AMD K6-2 300 and am getting floating point errors in Print Artist 4.0, but only when trying to make signs or crafts. I have two copies of Print Artist Platinum and one of Gold. The problem is the same with all. I am running Win 98 Second Edition on 64mb PC-100 ram, with a Trident 8mb video, no sound and a Diamond Supra Express Modem. I too have been through the AMD-400 on Win 95 nightmare and am looking for answers to this one. I have installed Office Professional 2000 successfully with no problems, but print artist is baffling me.

I don't build my own toaster, I buy it. Why do people still build computers?
It's kinda like hunting...if you want food, go to the grocery store.
I am glad to read about everyone else's computer problems because I was about to take advantage of what I thought was a great deal, but given the fact that this processor sucks, I'll pass!!

im having trouble getting my video card to work. i have a amd k6-s 360 and eveything works okay but the video. does anyone know what video driver goes with this? cant find it anywhere. pleae help. my friend purchased it on the yahoo auction and did not get the driver with it. it is a pc100 systemboard super socker7 m585lmr. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had a problem w/ my computer crashing black screen o' death, etc. until i found out that even though my motherboard manaual said to run a k6-2 450 @ 2.3volts it had 2.4 volts on the chip, after fixing that it worked, i also have to disable vga framebuffer to keep games from freezing, i hope this info helps anyone

I have crashes all the time too. We are running a GA-5AX super 7 mother board and AMD K6 2/300 with Windows 95B. Looks as if the bus speed needs adjusted but I need to hear from some one with our combination. The GA-5AX bus will only go to 66 mh. Any help please.

Just upgraded my porcessor to an AMD K6-2 450MHz chip. My O.S. is Windows98 and I have 64 Megs of PC-100 RAM. When I boot, I get the blue screen error of..
"A fatal exception 0E has occured at 0028:C0005338 in VXD VMM(01) + 00004338"
Anyone with advice to this problem PLEASE let me know. I figure it to be a hardware problem of some sort. Any suggestions, email me at StormChaserTNL@juno.com with any advice on the subject! Thanks!

If yall find out whats wrong please post it cause im having the same faulty problems on my k6-2 300 1mb mobo

I AM RUNNING A K6 400MHZ CPU AND THIS STILL LOCKS OUT AFTER 1 HOUR OF MESSING AROUND ANY HINTS CHEERS

Just as a follow up. We have a Gigabyte Super seven with AMD K6 2/300 that we were ready to put in the trash. The board was set at 2.2v 100*3 and it was crashing about once an hour. I changed the settings to 2.2v 66*4.5 and have had no problems at all. It has run without a hitch for two weeks.
Thanks group. Before I found this site we were lost.

Hi,
Problems with an K6-2 400 with a XA100plus motherboard.
1º. In the manual of the motherboard, only is specified the jumpers for configure an AMD K6-2 350. (2.2v).
2º. AMD K6-2 400 runs at 2.2v. (this is writed at CPU case)
3º. In the www.amd.com, we are found that this processor can use an voltage from 2.1v to 2.3v.
At 2.2v, our Windows crash every ten minits.
Then we had tried putting at 2.1v. At this voltage the machine don't start.
Finally, we had tried at 2.3v. Eureka, at this voltage our computer runs fine.
We expect this information can help anyone.
Maybe this change, can solve errors in other motherboards.
Try it and good luck.(Sorry for my bad english, we are spanish).

¿Costruir tostadoras? Thought I'd inject my 2 cents and a question:
I have an AMD K6-400 running on an FIC VA-503+ motherboard w/ 64MB of RAM. I have run many operating systems just fine, but Windows 98 restarts the computer at random times. This happens as often as once every 30 minutes to an hour. It's completely unpredictable, although I have noticed that it occurs most when resources are low and/or 3d gaming is going on. I'm wondering if it's my RAM? I am pretty sure that it is not 100MHz.
The other problem was running Win 95a on the computer. It gets those same problematic messages like "IOS: Driver Initialization Failed. You need to restart your computer", if I remember correctly. I know there is a patch available for Win 95b, but what about the first version?
Thanks anybody!

Can I get some assitance? I am getting a SUWIN General Fault Protection error when trying to install Win98. What's up with that? Anyones help would be greatly apperciated. Mucho Thanks :o)

Alright, so how do I fix the problem between Win 95 and AMD K62 Chips if I DON'T have OSR2? The AMD website knows nothing about it, nor does Microsoft. Can I update to OSR2? Is there another fix for the "A" version?

I have had many of the same types of problems. I have a K6-2 350 clocked to 400. It is running pretty stable now. The big problem I found was my chip is very heat sensitive. I have temperature monitor capability on my machine. After many months of updating drivers to finding out I needed to update to Windows 98 I finally noticed that the computer was more stable with the cover off. I decided to check the cpu temp. With the cover on it was running at 56 or 57 degrees celsius and it was unstable. With the cover off it was running at 52 or 53 degrees and was basically stable. My power supply fan was acting up so I replaced it and added a slot fan. Not much help. I then took my power supply fan and flipped it around so that it was sucking air out of the computer instead of blowing it in. The temp went down to 47 to 48 degrees with the cover on. The system was much more stable. I then decided to check to see what was between the heat sink and the cpu. There was some kind of rubbery crap. I removed it and put some thermal grease between the heat sink and cpu. Silicone grease works well too. The temperature dropped to 40 degrees. I then clocked my computer to 400 Mhz. The temperature went back up to about 44 or 45 degrees. I have now also loaded a program called CPUIdle which idles the cpu when not in heavy use lowering the temperature to 33 or 34 degrees. In heavy use the temp can still get up to 45 or 46 but drops as soon as the use does. I think a lot of you will be surprised to find out that the temperature sensitivity of the AMD is probably your biggest problem. Under heavy use the temperature will rise and cause a system crash. While rebooting the temperature will drop and the system will be stable until the temperature rises again and CRASH!! Sound familiar. One other thing to try to really keep the cpu cool would be one of the peltier cpu coolers. They are around $50 and can be found on the net by looking for peltier cpu coolers. I don't have one since I was able to get my system stable without one.
Hope this helps some of you.
Have fun.

Hi Randy,
I just installed an AMD K6 2 475 core voltage 2.2. To get to 475 I used memory speed 95 - instead of 100 - with multiplier of 5. Is it likely I will face freeze problems for using 95? Or should I overclock it to 500 using 100 times 5? The other alternative would be to use 100x4.5.Thanks for help.

Hi, I have a old computer (k6-266) is runing in Windows 98 SE. I want to install windows 95, use Fdisk, Format to re-format HD, but when the installation disk try to install windows 95 from CD, I see a black screen, and nothing happens. I reboot it again, use F3 to abort the installation, and try to run INSTALL or OEMSETUP direct from CD, or copy the files to HD and run the installation cammand again, the same black screen repited and so. I try diferente version of Windows 95 (with fat 16 or 32), nothing work. I try to install again Windows 98, it perfect. I don't know why I cannot install windows 95 (the same computer use windows 95, before it is substituted by WIndows 98, just I did not keep the older windows 95 osr2 in computer).
Some one can help me? Thanks.

I'm running a K6-2/300mhz on an Amptron PM-9600A motherboard. (Amptron is a subsiduary of PC Chips). I tried a couple of K6-2/333 cpu's in it after upgrading the bios from the Amptron site. Screen just froze at splash screen. Just thought I was getting cpu's so I changed companies and bought a K6-2/300. Same thing happened. I tried everything - reformatting hard drive, reinstalling windows, etc... Nothing would work. Upgraded to Win98SE - couldn't install it! Interestingly enough, it would boot just fine into DOS.
Then I read response #7 from Stick. He was 100% correct. When I ran the K6-2/300mhz at settings: 5.0x60mhz@2.2v - bingo! Up the computer booted!
Thanx Stick!
Btw, I downloaded a program called Powertweak (http://www.powertweak.com) and it optimizes all my settings and I could tell all sorts of things about the cpu.

Ok - spoke with some Gurus. After having problems booting up Amptron pm-9600a (PC Chips subsiduary) mobo with a K6-2/300mhz cpu it would freeze at recommended settings of 4.5x66mhz@2.2v. Found that it would run at 5.0x60mhz@2.2v. Also found out that the problem lies with the voltage regulators of the old board. If I run it at 4.5x66mhz@2.5v she'll boot up just fine. In fact, I then o/c the cpu at 4.0x83mhz@2.5v giving me 333mhz and so far so good! (I was told that running it at 2.5v is pretty safe).
BTW, for some of you above, there is a fix for the k6-2/III 350mhz cpu problems running with Win95a. Can find at: http://www.friendtech.com/Support&Service.htm
I guess it's a beta so use at your own risk.

My buddy has a problem that has been killing me... He has the following config:
ASUS P5A
AMD K6/2-500
128MB RAM (true 100!)We had migrated his old (K6/2 300)processor from a baby AT board to the P5A ATX... on bootup everything slowed right down - even *before* windows loaded at all... just the POST junk took AGES!
So... after testing everything (and I do mean everything) we decide to try a few other things -- like buying a decent new processor (which, thankfully, he wanted anyways) K6/2-50.... configuring the jumpers into a few new & untried positions (as mentioned earlier in this thread)... yet the problem still exists.
I have an identical setup... IDENTICAL... except for the hard disk... our CMOS settings are the same, his jumpers on m/b and all peripherals are configured identical to mine... etc etc etc.
So... why does my achine run about 2000% faster than his... we've raced them... and he can't even pull out of the gate before I smoke the finish line...
Sucks to be him? (yes!).
We went so far as to swap EVERY SINGLE PIECE in his system -- including motherboards... yet nothing works for him.
Any ideas????
Should I just ban him from computing altogether (hahahaha)
Thanks!!!!!!

Like a lot of you guys, I too bought an AMD processor (K6-2 450) and when I installed it, windows 98 crashed on me constantly. I tried so many suggestions to fix the problem, like many of the ones mentioned in this forum. How did I finally fix it? I noticed I had the core voltage set to 2.2 instead of 2.4 and when I made that change, all of the problems went away instantly. So before you go out and buy all new ram or reinstall windows for the 100th time, double check the jumpers on your motherboard.

I hvae just built a system with an
AMD K6-2 500mhz CPU
TMC AT socket 7 100mhz motherboard
and i am getting the following messageWhile initalizing device IOS:
Windows Protection Error. You Need to restart your computerhelp!!! is there a comfotable way out of this please I have the amd patch but I cant open windows to install the patch.
Thanks in advance Dann

I too had a lot of problems with my socket 7 mobo (Asus P5A) and AMD K6-2 500Mhz. Couldnt even install w98 due to crashes and protection (Vcpu 2.2Volt, Vio 3.5Volt).
Fix: Set Vcpu to 2.3Volt it runs like a train right now.
After fixing that I had a second problem: Computer crashes if I use Riva TNT2 card (Elsa Erazor III). But works fine with my Diamond Viper 550 (TNT 1).
Fix: Install latest AGP driver and IDE driver. In my case the ali 5 chipset updates AGP V1.65 and IDE 3.56. Also disabled AGP turbo mode see: http://www.ali.com.tw
Check out the knowledge base at the elsa site: http://www.elsa.com keyword: socket 7.

running win98 on amd-k2 500mz system. Geez,I wish I could have found this site BEFORE I bought this amd garbage. All of your problems...I have had...but I think I have finally solved the problem once and for all. I melted some lead, poured it into processor compartment, after it cooled I attached a rope to it.....and NOW I have a USEFUL BOAT ANCHOR!!! Much less frustration now!! Hope this helps some of you!!

I just got Amd k6 2 500mhz.it locks and somebody tellme that I need a patch ! Can I have a help from somebody and Email me a patch . please!!!

For all of you out there having problems with
your amd k6-2 cpu's.The biggest problem is the fan/heatsink. AMD Will not give you any specific info but you need at least a 60mx60mx15m fan on atleast a 60x60 heatsink if you are running over 350mz

amd k2-500, tyan s1590s, cannot install windows 98. getting all types of errors like windows protection, vxd, fatal exceptions, etc. after hours of pain, the problem turned out to be a bad hard drive. the main problem with this is that there were no such indication of this. scandisk was cool along with chkdsk. this problem was probably at the hardware level. i had a scsi 4 gb seagate. i was ready to chuck it out the windows until i figured it out. enjoy guys.

I have the exact same problem as Dann.
I'm trying to run my VA-503+ w/ my AMD 500mhz chip. While initializing device IOS:
Windows protection error
restart blah blah blahI'm stuck in DOS mode as well and the supposed "fix" doesn't work in dos.. only windows. I can't get into safe mode w/ either F8 or C:win /d:m
The patch I have is amdk6upd.exe from
http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/k623d/win95_update_k6.html
HELP!!

Well, in addition to all above:
My configuration:
AMD K6III-400
Asus P5A ATX
128 Mb SDRAM PC100
TNT2 M64 w. 32 Mb
and some other stuffis really f*** unstable!!! After a fresh install of Win98SE everything seems fine, for a minute or two.... Hangs, crash, everything!
I've tried everything:
disabling internal/external cache
disabling K6 write allocate option
PnP OS 'No' option
Loading BIOS defaults
BIOS upgrade
BIOS upgrade for TNT2 card
underclocking to 4,5x 83 MHz (in which the AGP-bus is running 31 MHz)Installing Win2000 isn't even possible; after the final hw-check it hangs!
What a waste of money! I don't blame Asus or Nvidia, but AMD! The bad thing is that I'm now stuck to this Socket7 mb, perhaps installing my old P233MMX would solve the problem.
BTW: PC100 mem is fine, it's all runnings stable in my Pent. III450.
Anyone any suggestions????

Yeah I have the same AMD crap. I have an AMD k6 2 - 500mhz but can only run it at 366mhz. If I run it faster windows jams after I log on. Can any one help me??????

I've solved the Win98-problem! It was my legacy ISA soundcard which caused the problem. After buying a $25 PCI Creative 128 card everything is fine now in Win98. But for now, the problems installing Win2000 remain. I will try to decrease memory timings and see whether that will help.
For so far I apologise for blaming AMD, but if the Win2000 problem isn't solved....

I'm running a AMD K6-2 450 on an Asus P5A ATX mobo and it works fine... I'm using such a crappy heatsink too.. I also have a Diamon Viper V770 TNT2 32Mb. and 196Mb ram. and maxtor 13Gb HD and runnig Win98SE ..
you may have problems with your hard drives.,. you may have to totally reformat the hard drives completly... and then reinstall.. hope this helps

Email I have just sent to support@gigabyte.de:
Since about a year I have an GA-5AA motherboard with
32 MB memory chip
(silver label MVD323S-28D 84M4880, 8+8 chips (HY57V168010B TC-10 9811A
KOREA, double sided),
small chip 81AN 24C02 LM8; 94V-0 and B6483A symbols on PCB)
CPU: AMD K6-2/400
S3-Trio64V2 PCI video card, Seagate ST32120A HD
AMIBIOS v1.2
The system was running Linux very reliably for months.Recently I have replaced that 32 MB memory with 64 MB memory
(white label PLUSS 05A0600VA 64MB PC-100;
8 chips (PLUSS 0023 SG ISGD08C2434PL) single sided
+ small chip KS24C02 0C S010 )
BIOS settings: SDRAM CAS: auto, data integrity: parity, burst: enabled,
DRAM timing: normal, pipe: enabled, gated clock: disabled
- same as with 32 MB memory. After booting the system I got typical memory problems: gcc signal 11,
crashes, etc within 1-2 minutes.I AM SURE that 64 MB memory module is OK, because I have put it in another
system (SYSTEM2, see below) to test it. I have also taken another 64 MB
memory module from SYSTEM2 and inserted it into my GA-5AA motherboard with
the same effect (frequent crashes). The other 64 MB memory module is:
8 HY57V658020A TC-10S 9912B KOREA chips + KS24C02 0C S913 single sidedI have tried to change BIOS options:
SDRAM CAS: 2 or 3
DRAM timing: fast, slow, normal
but the system was always crashing with any of 64 MB modules.I have also upgraded AMIBIOS to version F3 with no improvement.
I have re-seated the modules many times. Is there anything I can do to use new 64 MB PC-100 memory on GA-5AA REV2.2
motherboard?--
Tomasz MotylewskiP.S. I have also made a test where I have put both 32 MB and PLUSS 64 MB
modules on GA-5AA motherboard and the the system was working OK (96 MB RAM),
even under high load! But I need that 32 MB module on another machine!I have made all tests of GA-5AA with BIOS configuration/ parity
check: disabled. Setting it to enabled resulted in immediate parity
error/system halted message on boot (after memory was checked).SYSTEM2 (working correctly with any of 64 MB modules):
Shuttle HOT-597 motherboard (VIA MVP3 chipset) AMD K6-2 3D 400 MHz
Award v4.51PG BIOS
RIVA TNT video cardBoth 64 MB modules and 32 MB module are detected by BIOS as 10 ns SDRAM
modules

Soyo 5EMA+, K6-2 450, 64mb pc-100. Blows up in kernel32. 0d or 03 in vxd's. I have had some with bios setting no virus and pnp os=no. Upgraded to Windows ME. Big step backwards. Fan is from a K6-233. Will look into newer heat sink and cpu fan.

I've got a AMD K6/2-500MHz in a Asus Socket 7 P5AB motherboard, with 128MB PC100.
The CPU specifications are: 2.2v core, 3.3 v i/o. However, the mboard min v i/o is 3.5.
The problem (like many of you) is the Win98 Crash and the overheating of the CPU (over 65 Celsius).
The system only seems to work more stable if I take the lead off, but windows still crashes sometimes.
Does anyone have a solution diferent from buying another processor (Intel)? I'm tired of changing jumpers, heatsinks, fans and installing Win98!!!Best regards,
Rafael Antony.
