Want to install 95 on an i386SL Laptop. It has 6mb ram. Whenever I look at Win95 sysreq, it requires 386DX! I need to know if it will run on the SL, I think the SL may use the same 16-bit motherboard as the SX does, but hopefully not.

Don't worry about speed / memory - this machine just needs 95 on it and then it can stop being a drag on my life!

It may run But I think it will be slow and likely freeze up
Boost up your Ram to 32min.
6 mb cant do too much

Instead of typing 'setup' to get the installation process going type:

setup/nm

That causes it to not check for minimum cpu and RAM requirements. Here's some additional info:

I don't think that your machine meets the minimum requirements of a 386DX, 20MHz - isn't that a 16MHz chip?

Also not too sure how upgradeable the memory would be on a machine that old.

I once installed Win95 on a 386DX 40MHz with 8 Mb - it was... well, pretty pathetic.

No harm in trying though.

I can't recommend installing 95 on a machine with only 6MB, as 8MB is the bare minimum for Windows to stay alive, and with only that much you don't have much room for other programs. If you do get it to work, it'll take about ten minutes to boot up, but go ahead and try it just for kicks. ;)

Well, I don't recommend installing 95 because the minimum requirement is MORE than what you have. However, if you install it anyways. Edit the page file size to alot more hard drive space to act as RAM. Also, I don't remember how, but before you install past DOS, you can section a partition of the harddrive to be a virtual memory, which will be used as RAM. This will help the memory issue. I should say though, that 95 was very prone to memory leaks, (programs not returning memory to the system after use) So if you don't do as I have suggested, then you will notice frquent crashes and blue screens, and all the rest of the fun things. I highly recommend "startup cpl" available at www.freeware.com. Install this, it will place an icon called "startup" under control panel, this will allow you to control what will boot when the 95 machine boots. This way you can cut out all the programs for faster boot and more system memory. Good luck.

Again, as I said, the speed is no issue, I just want to get rid of this bomb! (that's what happen, when you don't invest in IBM quality... the laptop is an "Impulse", I searched Google for "Impulse Computer" and you get "Swedish Adult Toys" - no kidding!)

I just need to know if the 95 code can physically squeeze through the 386SL. Definately it will not fit through a 286, and it will on the 386DX, but what about SL? I will try, if the first few floppies go through, I call success. I've run 95 for a short period on many 486DX 33's with 8mb ram, no trouble. Since I've put Win 98 Micro and had even faster and better.

It's 32 bit (and apparently at least 20MHz after all)

386SL - 1990/10, 32bit ext/int bus

so it does seem to (barely) meet the min req.

ahh, beautiful!

thank you mr. jboy

this is what I need know - I thought SL was a power-saver version of SX, now it seems the power(conserving)house of the trio!

I feel kinda bad about selling this rare processor model, few know of the SL, but hey, what can I get for it?

Yeah, I recalled that the SL designation was for a lower voltage chip - I've even gota few ancient mobos so equipped - just wasn't sure if the external bus was 32 bit.

I've used 386 16MHz - only somewhat better than a 286 - hopefully yours is 20+MHz. Regardless, the performance really will be terrible, you'll need plenty of HDD space to compensate for the lack of installed ram. Best to install with as few bells & whistles as possible (wallpaper for example).

Win31 wouldn't run all that quickly with those specs.

Don't think that there's any real value other than the convenience of a laptop, frequently the chip itself is soldered directly onto the board.

The setup switches linked by DAVE can prove invaluable on a difficult install.

Good luck and have fun.

To be clear, I have used this laptop for about 10 years (and it was old then...) with Win 3.1, with Norton Desktop. It ran relatively fine. I just got myself two IBM ThinkPads (actually 3, one a 486, other a p-133{parts} and the last a PII 233!) so now I want to sell the Impulse. But, nobody would buy anything with 3.1, but 95 they go for well (check ebay!).

Oh, to be sure, Win31 would work tolerably well (but not impressively) on that machine.

I don't think that your prospective buyer is going to be a happy camper with Win95 on that relic though.

So... did you get it installed ok?

Hey,

Why not install Linux?

http://gd.tuwien.ac.at/opsys/linux/baslinux/

There are instructions on that page to add a GUI (graphical user interface), so you could get a working system.

I hope this helps,

James
