I recently purchased an early version of Windows 95 OEM with licence, manual, CD,
registration, certificate of authenticity and id# from a surplus reseller. I did not know that it was OEM till I received it.
I called the 800 piracy hotline number on the certificate to inguire if this was a legal copy, and was informed that since it was OEM, that it was not to be purchased as standalone but with new PC only, therefore it could not be legally used, but I doubted the
truthfulness of the Microsoft agent.
Is there any place, other than Microsoft, where I can verify if I can use this copy legally or not?

If you have CD - Licence,Manual with
Registration Number on Certificate of Authenticity then you have a legal copy.Microsoft just like you to buy from them.
Microsoft however have never offered any afterservice on OEM Copies.

Use it! Must be new to the PC world ¿
Oem - Just means out of the box! Still new
and legit. Pop it in and use it ;)

my father inlaw has sent his putter to me to install AOL recentley. well, in begining to do so, i come to find out his dial up is not set. so i put win 95 disc in, get to the certificate of authenticity part and it tells me, wrong number pal! i have used the disc on my own putter. it works, whats the deal?
