I am working on a friends computer and he has it set up so that you have to logon to start windows, however the kids have found that if you just close the login box it will still let you on the computer, my question is how can i set it up so that you must logon to use the computer?

Install the Tweak UI program from the Windows 98 CD(not SE).Browse the CD and find Tools\ResKit\PowerToy folder.Right-click TweakUI.inf and click Install.Close the Help screen if the program seems to stop.Use the Network tab to enter the password and check mark the box.Disable the Clear last user setting in the Paranoia page.Good luck.

I'll give the kids about five minutes to work round that little inconvenience.
To force a user to log-on you need Windows 2000 or XP. Windows 98 just does not have those kind of facilities.

Follow response #1. A lockout password setting in the bios. There should be System level and bios level. He should pick system level. This will prevent the machine from booting (even with a floppy) unless the proper password is given. The only way around this protective measure is removing the case cover and resetting the bios with jumpers or solder points. Or removing the battery for a period of time.

There is a way to make it necessary to log on to access Win98 and/or Win95. Go to this link, click on "security" then "prevent unauthorized users from accessing your computer". This will lead to a download "mustbevalidated.zip".

You will need to follow the directions in the included readme file accurately. I've used this on my twelve year old grandson's computer to keep computer illiterate adults from wreaking havoc. Got tired of having to reformat and reinstall to undo the damage done by so-called adults. It works great.
