I put it here;

http://www.cyberus.ca/~danpenny/

Rename the Win.cnf file in the Windows folder to Win.com. To do so, type the following line, and then press ENTER:

ren c:\windows\win.cnf c:\windows\win.com

Restart your computer.

It probably won't work, or will cause errors. O/S install generates WIN.COM for YOUR setup - it's not on ANY floppy disk or CD you have. Reinstall Windows to your existing WINDOWS folder.

Hi everyone,

Rambler,
You can extract win.com off the Windows CD, it is win.cnf and must be renamed to win.com as pointed out by Dan.

I have never had a problem replacing this and cannot understand why one would.

Best Regards,
Mesich

I;m afraid response number 2 is not correct. Win.com is not unique to any system and `can' be copied from another one.

I'm a bit lost on this. I have W98SE and my win.com is dated the same as all the other original W98SE CD files. I just restored it using sfc (to a spare folder)and it "looked" exactly like the one I had on my system, although neither had a version number.

Obviously there is something about win.cnf that I have missed out on - anyone care to educate me?

Derek

Hi Derek, hello everyone,

Derek,

Probably not the answer you expected but, there is not a version number. :-)

win.com is specific to the operating system and does not specify how the operating system manipulates any other software nor how I install Windows.

In other words, I could install Windows defaults, loading all the extra Communications options, Accessories, ect...

I could then install Windows without all the... well you know. :-)

In the end the win.com is the same.

I could then load up Office2000 and other programs that I prefer, win.com is still the same.

Not sure if this answers you question but, the win.com file is no diffferent on my machine running Win98SE than anyone else running Win98SE.

It is the same before you install Windows and after, regardless of what you do.

Best Regards,
Mesich

Thx Mesich - fine. It makes me wonder what all this win.cnf is about though because it seems like win.com is alive and well in the cab files on the Windows CD and presumably restorable.

Regards

Derek

Hi Derek, hello everyone,

I now understand your point Derek. :-)

I am going to play around a bit, as I'm sure you still are, and shall post back.

Hi Derek, hello everyone,

I was able to use SFC to extract win.com from the Win98 CD, well the .cab files on my hard drive.

I was not able to do such using the ext command after starting the computer with a boot disk. I received "file not found".

Using the boot disk I was able to run the ext command and extract the win.cnf file though.

Must give this some more thought and play around a bit more.

Best Regards,
Mesich

Aha, the plot thickens - sounds like you are onto it though. Maybe, as you originally suggested, the win.cnf idea is better because it works whichever way you go.

Derek
