Before you try getting the file, type:

path <Enter>

It should say something like:
path=c:\windows;c:\windows\command

If it doesn't, you may have a msdos.sys file problem.

I suspected the path was wrong because the system had a problem with all those files. Now I'm not sure what to think except to wonder if the whole c:\windows folder is gone. You can try typing:

dir c:\windows <Enter>

You should see a whole bunch of files, including win.com.

It's past my bedtime so I have to call it a day. But reinstalling windows over the top (without formatting) is an option. You won't lose anything except the windows updates. But maybe someone will come up with some other ideas.

Try using the System File Check utility from the prompt, have your CD ready as well;

C:\SFC /SCANNOW

Im not entirely sure if it will run from the command line though ??

Ok, I've sent the file (as requested), in the hope that it's the only problem

Chances are there's more going on, but who knows, maybe that'll do it

SFC doesn't work well from DOS, and 'SCANNOW' isn't a valid option in (... looks around) Windows 98 (d'oh!)

.. nice try though

hi guys thank you all for your suggestions.
ham30 yes i do have the windows folder thanks. hey there Jboy! thanks for the file man i really appreciate it, well i installed the file and copied it to windows folder and that went good, but now it says i need the vmm32.vxd file it seems to be missing or deleted would you mine sending me that file jboy?
also i copied the himem.sys file from a bootdisk so i extracted that one as well and that went good. So now when i try to start my machine the following is displayed

the following file is missing or corrupt
C:\windows\dblbuff.sys
C:\windows\ifshlp.sys then it says
Vmm32.vxd is required to run windows
well i think if i can get those files all will be good! once again thanks jboy!/everyone

Bad news Ldeezy, the vmm32.vxd file is unique to each system. It is built during a windows install. There are instructions on how to rebuild it at
http://www.easydesksoftware.com/news/news10.htm
But the simple way is just to reinstall windows 'on top' (without formatting). You will not lose any of your programs or data, but all the Microsoft updates will be gone.

However, I have to suspect that you 'have' or 'had' a nasty virus that wiped out all those files. An 'on top' win98 install will probably not get rid of any viruses.

I just had another thought. The path pointed to C: as the windows drive. You don't by any chance have windows installed on a different drive, do you?

Yeah, sorry to Jboy and the poster, SFC is valid in 98 just not that switch. I as most of the guys have been down that road where theres no other hope but to reinstall. If you have a second hard drive you might want to put a clean install on that and see if its possible to talk to the other drive after you get a system back up if theres any data you would afraid to lose.

I'm sorry Ldeezy. you said you found the windows directory on C:, so I don't think windows was installed on any other drive.

I have never attempted a rebuild of vmm32.vxd, but I am pretty sure that you would need a win98 install CD to do it.

This forum does not allow anyone to assist in obtaining pirate copies of software,
which includes Win98 install CDs.

I gather that you do not have the Dell recovery software. An option might be to contact Dell and see if they will sell you one. It would probably be cheaper than a Microsoft CD.

"SFC is valid in 98 "

No kidding? (gosh, I should write that down)

It doesn't run from the command prompt - maybe you noticed, the poster was unable to run Windows due to missing win.com (for starters)?

Probably not.

Ldeezy - odds are there are more than just a few files missing - running Windows without the CD or installation files sooner or later gives you grief.

There's a slim chance the installation files are backed up on the hard drive - you might want to check either in c:\win98 or c:\windows\options\cabs - if they are, you might be able to run setup from DOS and reinstall that way.

If not, you'll need to acquire the CD

Excellent point by Jboy. I forgot that Dell uses a special recovery partition on the hard drive. If it's in good shape, you may be able to do a restore. When you start your computer, hold down the CTRL key and press F11 to access the system recovery wizard.

Note that it does a format/install and you will lose all of your data, but windows should be back to running ok.
