My Bf's computer will not start up because it says the file win.com is missing. I think it must be something from online. We are trying everything to start it with the windows cd and a norton cd. We must be missing something. Is this a virus or what?
Can anyone help?

win.com is a valid entry...I didn't know. I have copied it from the win98se cd and now the windows splash screen is up and won't get past it.

win.com goes in the windows directory. Make ure it is there.

Try hitting F8 when you see windows loading. Select Safe Mode. If you can get into safe mode go to start> run and type in sfc

I don't know if this will run in safe mode or not.

Or do line by line startup. Could be a divice driver.

Just a few leads

Use a windows startup disk choose CD support and you can boot to the A: prompt. If your CD drive installs as E: the at the a: prompt type this command:
extract /a e:\win98\base4.cab win.com /l c:\windows
This will search all cabs and extract the file and place it in the Windows folder. Remove the Windows startup disk and reboot.
Hopefully you will reach your desktop. If not try F* and choose selectvie start-up and answer yes unitl it stops. The last file will be the culprit. Repost and we try again, OK.

Hi, I didn't wait for that, we reloaded win98 over the other version to get him running. I wish we would have tried yours first though. Boy I thought I tried everything from that c: prompt, lol.
