Subject: win98se updates - bad updatesOS: win98seCPU/Ram: i650/64 |
Comment: Hi, I have been trying to look for info on bad windows 98se updates for the present as win98 is in it's extended support period. I know there are some issues with certain updates, so I would like ti avoid those. I read that since people have downloaded IE 6, they have problems - like when trying to delete several files, the computer just freezes. I do not use IE personally, mozilla, but I would like to know any updates which could make the system unstable. I guess you could say updates, that once installed, would make me upGRADE the os. I personally like the os and would not like to upgrade it. I would however like to make an image of the drive with the updates on it, before they are obsolete, but I won't like to image the troublesome updates. I would completely remove IE if I hadn't read that it makes win unstable. Furthermore, I have this on a laptop, which only has 64Mb of RAM and a pIII (650mhz) cpu, so putting any newer M$ title would be undesirable. Plus does anyone know of any good sites to read about these kind of updates and is there such a site that has separate updates, links that do not redirect you M$ website? Thanks in advance.

Reply: hi cjae,I had a P3 550Mhz with 64 MB ram. Was running win98 throughout its life. Did not download any updates. Had no problems except for the occassional (sometimes frequent) scanreg / restore or windows install on top. I dont recommend not using updates, but this post is to tell you I had been living happily w/o them for about 2 1/2 years. I guess its possible. (I did try an update once, d/l from M$ themselves, but my machine only hung, did a scanreg/restore and vowed not to use updates again LOL ) Good Luck and Happy Computing,Kailas Shastry, India.

Reply: Hi Kailas, are you sure that this the solution, I think some of dl of updates are legit, but I wish to use this box on the net as well and I think not dl'n some of the updates would be silly, don't you think? I would be ok, if I kept it behind my router and firewall on the intranet, but I may be wrong and maybe M$ updates aren't good, I don't know. I would really appreciate everyones opinion. Also because of lack of resources, I probably wouldn't setup up a firewall on this box as either and the main user of the box wouldn't know when to let the safety up for certain things. Please help; again any opinions appreciated.

Reply: I, unlike Kailas and Beansoup, take all the updates for Win98SE that are relevant to my install. The only one I will not take is IE6 or IE6SP1 as it does not appear to mix too well with Win98SE. I do however use IE6SP1 on my WinXP Pro. I am also behind a firewall (Zone Alarm Pro). Additionally I am also behind a D-Link router which itself has a built in firewall. I hardly have any problems with Win98SE and prefer it over Win XP Pro so much that I have set it as my default OS in my Triple Boot PC (The third being Linux Mandrake 9.1). ___________________________________________ ☺ When everything else fails, read the instructions.

Reply: I also do not do any updates. My suggestion would be to save your system now if it's running fine. If you want the updates, download all the updates `for later install'.

Reply: Hi Everybody, Thanks for all the input, Much appreciated. Trying not add to much to this post, but I encourage anyone to answer, cause I think I know as well as anyone else that there is nothing great about Xp, and I would really like to keep 98 going. I would like to ask two things; can everyone please read the first post on this thread, just so people don't get too off topic, not that any has, but the intention is to get any relevent info about updates and if anyone has found any sites that have successfully extracted the updates for download of their site, not a M$ redirect. Thanks again for all the input.

Reply: What is a bad update? March 17, 2002 update changed kernel32.dll which made the desktop shortcuts only able to use large arrows. There are workarounds to the end result of that update. Is that a bad update? I know of no others that would fit the criteria. I liked IE6sp1 on Win98FE and I continue to like it on Win98SE. I don't believe MS produces bad updates. I believe the results of the updates as they interact with a particular system would make them appear as 'bad'. Spyware, Adware, IM and AOL do not run good with MS updates as they are all malware to some degree. There are only a couple of updates that I have not installed because they are irrelevant to my setup or the way I use this machine. Otherwise all others are installed. HTH Bryan

Reply: I tend to agree with mosaddique and Bryco. I generally have installed all Updates except IE6SP1 and the irrelevant ones for my particular systems. I have only found the one problem that Bryco mentioned about the Desktop Shortcut Icons, but I use the workaround (deleting a couple of registry keys) to take care of that. I use IE5.5, Windows Media Player 7.1, & DirectX 8.1 with Win98SE. (I feel that IE6, WMP9, & DirectX 9 are a little too bloated for Win98SE.) HTH Dave

Reply: I would advise people who are NOT taking the updates to do so. This is because Virus writers are increasingly changing tack from using attachments in e-mails as a form of propagating themselves to using known (and unsecured) vulnerabilities in Windows to do so. They are essentially relying on peoples ignorance about security updates and issues or reluctance to take on board the patches that Microsoft issues to plug the holes. Here is an article that should convince the sceptics. ___________________________________________ ☺ When everything else fails, read the instructions.

Reply: cjae There is a better method than the one shown by Jibuib. Go to my website (follow the Homepage link) and follow the link which says "How to get updates for your OS from Windows Update to your local hard drive". This methoid guarantees that you don't miss any updates for your install. ___________________________________________ ☺ When everything else fails, read the instructions.

If you already have some of the updates installed already does the download basket ignored those downloads, and if it does can you make it still download them? Also id there a way to get ie 5.5sp2? Thanks Mosaddique you don't know how much you made my day.
