Motherboard Chipset: ATI Radeon Xpress 200M, AMD Hammer
I have a Dell Inspiron 1501. Due to the fact that my win xp can't run many older programs, I decided to boot off my 4GB flash drive and install win98se on it. I've got video to work and all, but one problem I can't solve is the issue with sound. The sound card is a SigmaTel STAC9200, and a few sites here and there show it as if it is compatible with Win98, although most dont. And, when i download those programs they claim i dont have the right hardware.

Dell computers use integrated sound chips. Are you sure you have a sound card? Best to get ALL drivers for your Dell at the Dell site.
Id Dell has no driver for the sound then download SIW.exe and use it to find what sound chip you have then Google for a driver for it.

Well I realize this probably isn't gonna work out. My Sound card is listed as SigmaTel High Definition Audio Codec, and all the sites where I look for drivers it usually says WinXP/Win2000 or another version for windows Vista.

Yes I am. So what can I do in this case, but is there any way I can possibly find something that is COMPATIBLE with it? I know this is a laptop, but maybe theres something i could buy?

Explain why you are using Win98. Do you have programs that need Win98? This Laptop came with WinXP or Vista didn't it? You can run programs in compatibility mode.

Hahaha, cmon man, do you honestly think that someone who went through the trouble of booting up on a USB drive and installing windows 98 wouldnt think to try using the compatibility mode in XP? For some reason compatibility mode doesnt work... and I REALLY want to play Oregon Trail II, but I cant. By the way, im using windows 98.

Yea, I forgot you are booting off a flash drive.
To answer your question on wheather you tried compatibility mode, who knows if you even know about it. I'm blind out here.I suggest you download SIW.exe and see what SIW says you have for sound chip.

The sigmatel STAC9200 sounds more like the sound chip. I think Intel is involved with this chip. I also think you will not find a driver for Win98. This is brand new technology and nobody is going to bother writing drivers for Win98. You can try to research further. I do have two links that may get you started.

Might be a good idea to check out thrift stores, goodwill, flea markets, my garage, etc. for an ancient P-I and run the old software and games on it. Setting up 98 on that Dell sounds like a square-peg-round-hole situation.

Or, go to Dell's support site, enter the Service Tag and find out exactly what sound card/device is on the computer. Part numbers and descriptions are listed under "Original System Configuration."
THEN figure out what drivers you need.
Life's more painless for the brainless.

I'm having a HP BRIO BAX D76xx PC with P-III Processor, 450 MHz & 64 MB RAM.
I reformatted my hard drive and now I'm unable to load it's sound driver. I have tried updating my drivers and that didn't work.
Please help me in this regard.
