CPU/Ram: Core 2/1024

Comment:

Hi,
on my old mobo Abit BX133 raid i used win98se and shutdown OK, no need for extra patches. Now i upgraded on Asus P5LD2 and started with clean Win98SE instalation but I have problems with shutdown - screen switch to text mode with blinking cursor. But sometimes it shutdown OK to "you may shutdown..." screen (i don't have installed ACPI because it makes problems). It behaves very random. Reboot works always OK. I tried to trace problem in bootlog.txt:

Terminate = User
Terminate = Query Drivers
EndTerminate = Query Drivers
Terminate = Unload Network
EndTerminate = Unload Network
Terminate = Reset Display
EndTerminate = Reset Display
EndTerminate = User
Terminate = KERNEL
Terminate = RIT
EndTerminate = RIT
Terminate = Win32

There's missing EndTerminate = KERNEL line.
I found a lot of tips around but nothing seems works for me. I have installed shutdown supplement patch, already have assigned irq for vga, no antivirus, tried older version od configmg.vxd from 98 nonSE, tried to disable all startup programs (also in registry,win.ini/run) it seemed to help a bit but I cannot determine specific program causing problems.

Doues anybody solved it?
Or is there some detailed description of win98 shutdown and reboot process (how differs shutdown from reboot)? What program is executed LAST on reboot? Maybe I can modify the code replacing reboot to hlt or infinite loop...

Frequently, installing the Mapped Drives Shutdown Supplement will cure this problem, even though you may not have any mapped drives.

If it doesn't help, it can easily be uninstalled.

I think that any change could cause the well-known shutdown problems on W98SE to suddenly appear, so it's well worth persuing #1 & #2.

There are some websites devoted to W98SE shut down issues so come back if you still remain in trouble and I'll see if I can dig them out.

I had the same problem recently. It was caused by setting the monitor to go to sleep mode after an hour under Power Management by timing out the video card. If the the video had never timed out, no problem. If the video had timed out, the system would never shut down. System here is a P4/2GHz on Asus P4P800S running Windows 98SE. Video is an ATI All-In-Wonder 9800 Pro.

One point to note, Win98 doesn't handle 1024MB of RAM very well. You may need to either remove some RAM of Modify the Registry.

Hi, thanks for replies.

Zenith - Shutdown Supplement have already installed

Dave357 - Mapped Drives Shutdown Supplement have already installed (i don't use any personal network, just cable modem connection)

Derek - Yes I browsed through many of them...

Pilot - Really? This one doesn't get in my mind. I have set timeout about 20min for monitor, i'll try to disable it.

OtheHill - I don't met any problems with memory yet. I only limited Vcache size in system.ini. What needs to be changed in registry?

Re RAM. I think perhaps OtheHill meant the system.ini vcache mod - you set it to 512M or less. I don't know of any registry mod required.

You can always use Cacheman to handle RAM over 512MB in Win98/ME. I ran 1GB quite well on my P3 system.

On one computer with an FIC VA503+ motherboard, I never solved the problem. The computer shut down fine with Windows 95. When I switched to 98SE the Shutdown problem began. After loading all the MOB drivers from FIC and trying all the fixes from MS, and all over the Internet I decided to accept the shutdown problems on this MOB as normal. Now when I choose RESTART to shutdown and switch the computer off as it begins the reboot process.

Derek is correct in response #7. I misspoke.

Doug
I believe there was a patch from MSoft for computers with some VIA chipsets to fix that problem.

Re #8 & #9.

Opinions vary about those type of programs but all you "need" to get >512M RAM to run is the sytem.ini mod which I gather you've already incorporated.

If you want to get this aspect off your back then just post the line you put in system.ini (which I suspect will turn out to be fine).

{snorts} - sure, and what it does is make the very same aforementioned (and already implemented) registry edit

I've been playing quite a bit with a universal usb driver package {via a bunch of inf files} for win98se whereas it detects pretty much all usb sticks I plug into it..
The main problem I struck as soon as I went anywhere near the default usb drivers, was the shutdown problem..
To fix it I installed 240075UP.exe then 242975USA8.exe , in that order..
The system would then shutdown no probs...

Hi,
I use Maximus Decim nUSB drivers for universal mass storage. On previos mobo and win98se installation it works fine, without shutdown hangs. Now divers works also fine for USB devices but not sure they can cause hangs. I installed this drivers very soon after new win98se installation...
