After reinstalling Win98SE (FDISK then FORMAT then SETUP from CD) Windows seems to think the video adapter now is only a standard PCI VGA adapter (and therefore only allowing the standard VGA driver, 16 colors, etc.) despite the fact that Win98SE was running on this same hardware for years with SVGA+ (1024x768, 256 colors, etc.). I'm puzzled why this reinstall caused this problem, as I did a reinstall from this same CD a year ago without incident. Any bright ideas as to how or why this happened, and more importantly, suggestions as to steps I can take to reeducate Win98SE to find the video adapter hardware correctly? I tried asking it to search for new hardware but of course it didn't find anything new because it thinks it has it right already. I did try the complete reinstall again a second time, and the result is the same crippled video. This is on a Micron Pentium I 200mhz, 80mb & .8GB. All contributions gratefully accepted. Thanks.
When you did the format you wiped out the correct driver. You are now using the stock windows driver. You will have to dig out the driver for your video card and install it.
For your own protection, standard vga is the default setting when Windows first boots up. You need to change to your adapter and, as bob says, install its drivers by going to DISPLAY / SETTINGS
