HI:I upgraded Today my win 98 To win 98SE
everything work Fine Except When I shutdown The Computer Restart Instead Of Shutoff
I have Tried Everything I can Think Off
with no joy
on the other hand The win98SE (MS Patch)
it doesn,t work
BTW:Win 98SE Shutdown Fine via the Safe mode
any ideas Before I Revert Back to win 98 1ST
regards,Poweraid

Install the Shutdown Supplement patch
http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WUCritical/q273017/Default.asp

The "patch" works like 1 out of 8 times for me.
Try this:
Click Start | Run | MSCONFIG [Click OK]
Click the Advanced button (near bottom right)
Put a check for Disable Fast Shutdown
Click OK
Reboot
Now try a shutdown. If this works or not, repost for more suggestions.

HI:As I said Before I have tried
everything with no joy
Disable Fast shutdown , Exit Win Sound, APM,
Disable Sound in hardware Profile, Assign IRQ To AGP in Bios, I also used a Third Party Software To Force Win 98SE to Shutoff without any Result
Maybe there is a Bug with win 98SE
thanks..

poweraid,
I have one computer that does the same thing. I installed all the patches, changed video cards, updated the BIOS, did everything. I think there are some motherboards that have a built-in conflict with Win 98SE shutdown. On this same computer, Win 95 shutdown fine.
I just select RESTART whenever I shutdown that computer and as it is rebooting I turn it off.

Hi
This Url outlines the problem
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q238/0/96.asp
I gathered that after applying the patch the fast shutdown option was no longer available.
Yours by what you've written, is still there to check as an option.

I had the same problem. Tried everything too. Finally formatted, installed the SE upgrade and it's been working fine.
