Win98 system file checker erratic?

I keep getting different results when I run System File Checker in Win98se. For example, today I ran it & got 4 possible corrupted files. Two of these have been consistent, so I replaced them. Then I ran checker again 15 minutes later & got 15 files. The other 2 files from the first running were repeated. I rebooted and ran it again & got 6 files, all different from before. What would cause this constant fluctuation in potential corrupted files?

Thanks for the reply, DW. The problem wasn't restoration of files using System File Checker. I have no problem there. It's why does system File Checker give different results of possibly corrupted files, just minutes apart, with no changes made.

I don't have an answer for you but would add that this does NOT look at all like the fairly well known issues of SFC reporting specific files as corrupted when they are not.
Maybe someone knows of a way to uninstall & re-install "MS System Information" because it looks like it's gone sick.
