After you've checked out the above sites, try this tip.

On the desktop right click a free area and select New/Shortcut. In the Command Line, type or copy this line exactly as you see it.

C:\windows\rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindows

Yep that's what I use. And here is another for a Restart shortcut:

C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.exe user.exe,exitwindowsexec

Both the shortcuts given will work for W95 & W98.

For W98 this is better for restart:
C:\WINDOWS\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx 2

It's faster because it doesn't go to DOS first.

Similarly for shut down use:
C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.exe shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx 1

Both of these are MS recommendations for W98. They've wrapped round on here. They should be all on one line with a single space after the exe in each case.

I'd say probably anyone who as ever used Win 95, 98 or 98se experienced at some point or another this kind of hanging. But i don't anymore, ever since i discovered this nice little program by Steve Gibson called Wizmo. Now it does a lot more than just hang free rebooting, but you should see for yourself:

Wizmo's page

This little program will let you reboot without problems. Just save the program to your ./windows/command folder, then create a shortcut. After that get into properties and rename the shortcut to "C:\Windows\command\wizmo.exe reboot" (note the space) and then move it to the C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu folder. That way it will be easily accessible from the start button, and clicking it will make your system reboot perfectly, without hanging. I never reboot without it!

HTH.

Lightspeed.

I'm sure it works, but why add yet another program when Windows does the job?

Try all the MS shut down fixes and if you still have trouble get their mapped drives shut down fix. This has often been the one that finally sorts out the problem (even when you don't have mapped drives).

I don't believe a third party prog should be necessary (I don't use one and mine shuts down fine). If, however, you should decide to try this Wizmo prog please report back to let us know how you get on.

thanks for the help.
so far i have followed the trouble shotting on ms, but no luck.
i think it might be a shared irq between my graphics card and pci stearing.
i can not change this through windows. i have tried changing the slot that the card is in also. when i disable/remove graphics or use safe mode its ok.

Probably that mapped drives thingy, many times I've noticed that fixes it.

Glad you fixed it whatever, thx for popping back.
