Is there a dos based program that can tell me the serial number of a operating system installed on a computer because i don't want to use one of my serial numbers for a customers computer. and they don't have their cd. if so please tell me where i can get it from.
Thankyou,
Matt

will the machine bootup in windows, if it does, then download advisor.exe from belarc.com. It will tell you a lot of stuff about your computer.

Matt, If you mean the 25 digit Product Key and can get into Windows on that computer Mesich has instructions at his site below.

Sure there is and you already have it.
At the C:\>type cd windows [Enter]
At C:\Windows>type edit system.dat [Enter]Using the Page Down key on the keyboard scroll until you see Product Key.
You may have to page down quite a few times.
I just did it and mine is on line 1254.You can see the line number in the bottom right corner of the screen.

If you can get into Windows go with Tufenuf's suggestion.
The .vbs file was written by Doug Knox.
If you have to use my suggestion in response #3 be carefull not to delete any changes.
If when you exit and it ask if you want to save the changes reply NO.
Tufenuf,
Where have you been? On vacation or what?
If so I hope you enjoyed. Glad to see you are back and sharing your vast knowledge with others.MERRY
CHRISTMAS !!Mesich

Just to add before I run out the door Belarc Advisor will do the same if you can start Windows and Internet Explorer as stated by Budm.
Nice program to download and print out the results when your computer is running well.
You can print out a copy for when things aren't going so well.Take Care,
Mesich

Thank EVERYONE! :)
But i can't boot into windows i should have said that but don't worry about it now. ty for the system.dat procedure
i didn't need it because i already installed win98 with one of my serial numbers.

I use diag from www.bootdisk.com. It runs in dos. You may need to use the F8 option to get the menu and choose 'command prompt only' and then run it because I'm not sure it'll work if you boot from a bootdisk.
